So I paid Mr Minit $150 for a new key cut and coded but it seems I need two working keys to then program a third?
With only one working key I need a 'Code Word' from Mazda to get the new key working.
Do I have this right? There does seem to be conflicting info around as to the correct programming procedure so I'm a little confused.
Old threads on here seem.to I.ply that others have had success with Mr Minit keys. I'd love to learn more.
Any light you can shed is appreciated.

I am pretty sure I had one cut and chipped at a local (Canberra) lock service for the GM replacement, but that car and its keys have gone to a new owner so I can't look at the keys to confirm. I seem to remember it came with only one key, so I got another for a security blanket. All I needed was a key that worked, as I remember it, and this was one of those shops that specialised in locks/keys, not sure how that compares to Mr Minit. They cut the key, then took both out the back for several minutes to do the matching I assume.

My understanding, like GM's, is it's simpler than you've been recently advised by Mr Minit, but hks_kansei would know:

To clarify, the Mr. Minit guy didn't tell me anything re the procedure to program the key and I'll head back there to pick his brains the next day or two. The procedures I mentioned I took off the net (the big forum and other sources) and most would seem to agree with each other in that you need two working keys with unique transponders (no clones) to then program a third key, otherwise a dealer needs to be involved to get the 8 digit code associated with the immobilizer.
Some people have said that through the assistance of a third party (locksmith, website) they have had their only key cloned as a workaround to the above issue. @greenmachine, mebbe this is what happened for you?

I dunno, but your car must be one of the last NB8As produced? Sometimes changes are introduced to late production cars that are nominally only part of the next model. I don't know if the NBs had any changes to keys/immobilisers/ecus/etc at that changeover, if they did you may have an NB8B ignition key arrangement.
FWIW, AIRI the GM Mk2 was a mid/late-1998 build NB8A, so early production.
