LSD Rebuild

Postby pdsman53 » Wed Aug 24, 2022 4:35 pm

Hi guys,

I recently installed a 4.1 LSD Diff (with Axles) from my old trackday NA Clubman, into my current trackday '99 NB8A.

From memory....it was quite noisy in the NA, which is now apparent in the NB.
..with the use of my son's Stethoscope (and although it it very difficult to be 100% sure), he more or less discounted the wheel bearings etc. and narrowed it down to the Diff....which makes sense, as the original 3.6 Diff was pretty quiet.

I purchased a Rebuild kit (from BOFI in the UK) and intended on doing it myself, based on a couple of very informative youtube videos.
I have the necessary 7-8" Micrometer and a micrometer stand for checking the backlash.

Has anyone done an LSD rebuild, that can/would advise either:-
1...not to do it and leave it to the experts (they quote 4 hours @ $140+p/hr = $560)...(which could obviously buy a set of tyres etc).
Before handing it over, should I save myself some $$ and open it up to determine if the Crown Wheel and Pinion/internal gears are too badly worn for a rebuild??....if so, how much wear, is too much??
or
2...do the job myself, but look out for 'these' possible pitfalls/issues....that you have previously experienced.
Do I need any other special tools like...a Hydraulic press to remove/install the 4x Bearings
(some forums indicate that the bearings removal/install very easily with minimal effort....but I doubt mine will be that simple...nothing ever is).

Your expert advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Jim

No reply yet Flycasta.
I was hoping to see a reply, prior to making the decision to do it myself or cough up the $550+ and the rebuild kit...to a Diff specialist.
