96mm is the size of the hole in the 2 din frame. Thus adding the borders it 'looks' like the extra height of 123mm?

2.5 din is 5 inches = 127mm. 123 is absolute max.

Measurements from my 1993 NA8 are the measurements of the tombstone opening as my OEM radio & cubby don't protrude either outward or up or down or sideways. In other words, if I were to remove my OEM radio & cubby & replace them with a blanking plate, the blanking plate would need to measure 179mm x 123mm.

I agree. Flush fit, edge to edge.
I just wonder if the 2.5 din 'loosely' translates to 123mm? (5 inch is 127mm).

Reckon it does, hence why I put '7" wide x 5" wide approx' in my first post which included DIN sizes as it appeared from searches there was a slight variation.

I may have found the answer;
FC0255235A Cubby
LA0255235 Blank plate
Available from Amayama for $72 delivered, will check Mazda.

But the tombstone is a M2-1028 item so looks longer and different HVAC opening. I will somehow check the opening dimensions.

WINNER! I blew up the second picture to lifesize and the dimensions seem correct 180mm X 122mm.

Ordered from Amayama.
Mazda said both parts unavailable. Quoted $141 and $137 for each.

Nice result. No surprise that Mazda's quote was obscenely expensive.
