Power steering pump

Postby Purfler » Sat Sep 11, 2021 2:51 pm

My 1993 NA LE's power steering pump is starting to weep a bit - outrageous after only 28 years! I see the Mazda kits on ebay from the UK will cost about $90 delivered to Aus, but cannot find them locally. Does anyone know if they are available and at what price?

Thanks in advance.

Here's a local one at Keilor East for $65 pick-up or $80 delivered: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/172805721695
However, you may want a kit from Mazda as the UK ones appear to be - this one's nearly half the price: https://www.autolinkmx5.com/power-steer ... 7231-p.asp
Before finding the above my suggestion was going to be check with a good local power steering business or Amayama: https://www.amayama.com/en or even your local Mazda dealer.

Many thanks. I think I'd prefer the genuine Mazda kit. I'll try the local Mazda dealer - wonder if they do click and collect :-)

Doubt the dealer will beat $35 for genuine Mazda parts from Amayama: https://www.amayama.com/en/part/mazda/n00232610
Btw, if you haven't already, probably worth confirming the PS pump is original.

Thanks once again for the reply. I had ordered from Amayama after reading your previous post - I really didn't think I could get genuine parts for a better price and time isn't an issue:

1. because it has only just started a slight weep (haven't we all?)
2. If it has done 10km in the last few months I'd be amazed, and I don't think that's going to change (see above)

I hadn't thought of it not being original. It looks it (famous last words) and when I did the high pressure hose a couple years ago it all looked like it hadn't been touched since new.

Thanks again,

Tim

Are you sure it's not justthe pump shaft seal?, you should be able to get the pump into a position to change the seal without undoing the lines. IF so, you should be able to take off the pully, pull out the seal using a pick or a self tapping screw, go to bearing supplies get a new seal( take the old one for a sample) and fit it, shouldn't take more than a couple of hours and cost around $10
