Oh dear!
Small hiccup ...
Going into town on New Year's Eve, stopped with no water.
Trailered the car home, where it sat until I could get around to looking at it.
Turns out the heater water hose had come off the outlet at the back of the head.. There had been no smoke or steam at the time, so the radiator was filled, and with fingers crossed the key was turned - started immediately, idled nicely, no smoke, no overheating. Compressions are down a bit (~130), but pretty even, and it is not using water. Bullet dodged? Maybe, hopefully - time will tell. Certainly seems to have the same grunt as before, too much time driving the barge (the old Falcon wagon) resulted in a speeding ticket first time out ...
A Qmax coolant re-route is on its way, it was meant for when the head came off for the (assumed) blown HG, and the catch tank setup needs a bit of work. The rego check showed up a weep on the bottom of the bellhousing, so it looks like the gearbox has to come out and new rear main seal installed before the car is inspected for rego next year.
I have been looking closely at the radiator, and the oil cooler mounted on the back. I am thinking about a dual pass crossflow rad, inlet and outlet on the cold side. That might allow me to mount my as-yet-unused oil/water heat exchanger under the crank pulley - I need to pull the undertray off, and start measuring and see if this might be feasible.

Been giving the RGM some exercise lately, keeping a close eye on the coolant level. Seems to be using a little, but not consistently so, just every so often. I have three litres in the boot, so I just did a little run to Nowra to visit Grandchild #3, then Nowra-Goulburn-Crookwell-Taralga-Bathurst-Taralga-Goulburn-Nowra over three days. Used none of my three litre reserve, so pretty happy with that.
However, on the start of the return journey I discovered that the passenger side remote actuator is making a noise, but not completing the job . I wonder how long I have been thinking the car is secure, all the while the passenger door is unlocked? Then, pulling away from the servo to start the trip home - bang! The drivers window cable has broken, and the trip home was pretty noisy and windy, good thing the weather was kind.
This morning the drivers door from the black car was cannibalised for the window lifter, the job finished just before the rain arrived. I think I will put this in the car, and get the broken one repaired for a spare.
Needless to say, after dismantling the door to get the winder out, I come inside and find there is an inquiry in my PMs for the doors ... You can always rely on Murphy!!

That Nerriga road is a nice drive, or at least it is without holiday traffic.
It does sound like you dodged the bullet. I've found that If you're using ethylene glycol in the coolant then the best way to diagnose that tiny HG leak is to leave the car idling in the garage for a minute or two after a run. If there's coolant getting into the bores then the car seems surrounded by a faint sickly sweet smell. Alternately just get technical and have your local shop do a CO test in the top of the radiator.

Another 'best-laid-plans' thrown into disarray.
The soft-top off the GM which was planned for transfer to this car, looks to be cactus. I knew about the failed threads on the shoulder seam driver's side, and had made arrangements with a mobile vinyl welding service to fix them. But when I went down to get it off the GM, I found that the vinyl above the glass rear window is torn all the way across above the rear window, and I suspect that this might be non-repairable. I am waiting on the vinyl repairer to get back to me on what, if anything, he can do about it.
It may be that I am faced with just running the hardtop until I can find a decent secondhand softtop, and that is no great hardship. Alternatively I can bite the bullet and buy a new one.
I think I will play Scrooge for a while, and see what the classifieds turn up.

If you do eventually go down the line of an entirely new top, Maniac Lachy’s zip down glass window soft top is definitely one to consider. It’s what I would go for if I ever have to replace mine.

There are OK condition used soft-tops out there, but they're all getting on by now and really you're just kicking the can down the road a little. If you're planning to keep the car for a good amount of time then I think it's worth investing in a new top. But if it's just to get you by for now, you can pick up a used one for ~$5-700. It's a lot less work bolting in a used one already on the frame for sure, but I expect you'll be revisiting it in another 2 years.
If you do get one new, the zip down glass is great - all the air flow of top down but with the shade of top up.

I had forgotten about that - thanks, that is something I will certainly follow up! ML, the air flow is something that really appeals.

That is something that is preying on my mind ML, I think I would want to see it on the car first. And yes, I am planning on hanging on to it.

Pulling the trigger tonight on a pair of Speedhut gauges, water temp and oil pressure, to replace the cluster gauges. The $Aussie is reasonably healthy, and procrastination will not get this fixed. I need to pull the cluster out anyway, the rego inspector last year said to fix the blinking CEL and pulling the bulb is the only way.
In other news the AiM SoloDL2 saga drags on, I'll post an update on that thread.
Looking closely at a Kraken manifold, and maybe an EFR. Top or bottom mount, liking the bottom for stealth, but not for access for maintenance. It IS a factory turbo, so maybe stealth is over-rated? Efficiency will suffer in a top mount, but for now the motor will not be built, and screwing the few Kws out of it will not be a priority, maybe forever.

I sent some time on the Speedhut site, and I'm not satisfied that I can get the right colours to match the stock gauges/lighting just by ticking boxes. I am hoping that Lokiel will stop by and have some advice on how he went about it, I'll re-read his writeup but I don't remember any discussion of this aspect in his excellent writeup of installing these gauges in the cluster.

Do what I did with mine, change the whole cluster lighting colour scheme!
If they still do it, the silver faces are a pretty close match to the SE gauges...

Nevyn, that is the backup plan. I suspect their menu only has a limited selection from the range available. I have an email from them saying 'no problem', but that doesn't seem to be reflected in the available choices,

Weird, they seem to only have half the colour options they used to offer (especially missing the silver face/red numbers combo that works so well) and nothing about custom logos etc.
Maybe they downsized their workforce during covid last year so removed some options to ease up the workload?
