Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
I woke up this morning to two more photos from Darren. Turbo test fitted to the manifold and roughly clocked.
Turbo is looking kinda small here
The backside
Everything looks good. Wastegate actuator should have good movement there. The oil feed and drain look like they should be pretty close to vertical once the manifold is bolted to the head. Darren is thinking we'll runt he IC piping behind the headlight like the stock SE piping, rather than dropping down into the mess of hoses for AC and PS below the manifold, so the compressor housing is clocked pointing outboard.

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
I went for a couple of drives over the Christmas and New Years period, one drive I put time in my friend's NitroDann 2860R powered NB8B, and one in my NA8. Two very different cars!
On the public roads, on a Sunday afternoon, they both go the same pace
The drive in the turbo was great, there's good power there and it's a lot of fun. It reminded me what it was like to drive my SE and I miss it.
The drive in the NA was also a lot of fun, but very different. It was more of a cruise, the car has a lot of roll and not much power once you're moving - dropping the throttle makes no discernible difference to forward momentum
I did thoroughly enjoy the drive, bonded more with the NA than I had to date. I started to entertain the idea of keeping it, but quickly realised on top of the insurance and registration, I'd want to put ~$8-10k into the car to bring it to a place I'd be happy with it, and it's too much for a 3rd car when there's already another fun car present. It will make someone very happy when I sell though, I'm sure of it.
I can't wait to get my SE back!

I went down yesterday for a quick look, Daz is still on Christmas New Year break till Monday, but I caught up with Ian who was tinkering with his Triumph......

Thanks for the pics Daffy, they look great. I'm sure things will start bolting up soon, with any luck I'll be driving the car in February

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
NA update. Nearing putting the car on the market and moving it on. I
As mentioned previously I took it for a blast over Mt Mee with a friend early in the new year. On a stop at the Mt Mee lookout I could hear some gurgelling from the engine, temp guage wasn't showing high though. I could see some sludge in the overflow bottle and figured I needed to flush and burp the system.
The coolant looked fresh, but the sysem was a bit rusty, so I flushed it through multiple times with some Penrite coolant flush and distilled water. I also noticed the rad cap was toast, and I figured the thermostat was probably ready for replacement. I used my old SE rad cap which was in good condition and a new high flow thermostat and gasket from Mania also went in.
I'm sure I could have just ran this for another 100k, but I'm a stickler for details
What do you mean, this shouldn't be a bronze colour?
Flushed more times than a toilet with a floater! I actually did another one after this
I'd also noticed that the hand brake wasn't working well, you could reef on the leaver until it was vertical but on a slope could could feel the brakes weren't well engaged. So I adjusted both the handle in the cabin and the adjusters on the rear calipers and now the hand break holds well, and the handle doesn't need to point to the sky!
A run up Glorious last weekend showed all was working well. Now it's time to tidy it up and collect my $35k!
What? That's what NAs go for now right?

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
SE Update
It's been a slow start to the new year, Darren has had more straight forward jobs take priority over a project like mine, which is understandable. But This week we're back on!
This Subaru took priority over my SE, the owner posted the "spotto" to one of the FB groups
Darren has fitted up the flattop intake manifold and Skunk2 throttle body, with ID1050x injectors under the fuel rail, and the Kraken exahust manifold, turbo and dump. He's noted the usual fitment issues that the likes of Lokiel have pointed out, namely the AC line that drops down in the same place as the dump pipe, the ABS line that drops down the the front passenger wheel, and also the heater pipe under the manifold. But he's all over it and is making the necessary adjustments.
Intake side is taking shape
Turbo is test fitted
Fitment at the rear is clear of the firewall shelf, but the ABS line needed to be bent out of the way, and AC needs a re-route
Bird's eye view
Not clearance issues with the shelf under the compressor housing as is the case with FM's manifold
The turbo is clocked in it's final position, and now it's time to sort out the plumbing for the coolant, oil and air. Coolant will come from a Flyin Miata coolant re-route, which has barbs especially for a turbo water feed and return, the stock SE ports will be blocked off. Oil will use the SE's stock oil feed and return.
The IC piping will follow the SE's path, and he'll try to reuse my Nitro Dann intake shield, which would be excellent. The man who will fab the IC pipes should be in next week! I've opted to go with some aluminium pipes, and I'll leave them in raw colour rather than paint them. I quite like the raw silver. As the hot charge pipe will pass near the air intake, as it was in the previous configuration, Darren will wrap the IC pipe to prevent heat transfer to the fresh air going to the inake.
So, things are progressing now. I think we still need to sort out a new catch can setup, the old Nitro Dann one won't work in it's current location, as thats the same area as the hight mounted turbo, and well the turbo takes priority! We might re-locate the can elsewhere, but I'm not really sure it was working properly, it never collected much oil but my intercooler pipes had a film of oil in them. It might be best to start fresh?
I'm heading down there this Wednesday to collect the discarded parts, hopefully I can sell a few of them on to other users, but I think I'd like to keep the stock turbo as a trophy

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
I had the same experiance with the NitroDann catch can - oil in the intake pipe. I eventually changed to a Radium Race Can, much better design but still had a tiny amount getting sucked through. I ended up changing the output routing from the can to the Nitrodann airbox BOV return port with a filter inside the box. I copied this idea off GreenMachine and it works perfectly. Plenty of vent, no oil in the intake
On that note, I would recommend when you're up and running to hook a boost gauge up to a barb fitting on the oil cap and do a full boost run to see if you have excess blowby. I saw 2-3 psi in mine till I did the "tiny hole" mod and ran a larger welded hose fitting from the rocker cover.
Funny enough my persistent oil leak stopped after that was sorted

What is the tiny hole mod?
I think my rotrex’d nb is showing similar symptoms

Inside the cam cover there is baffling on both sides. The hotside baffling has a ‘tiny hole’ feeding it. Enlarging this hole allows more gas to pass at a slower rate.
I drilled mine out to 10mm (and added a second 10mm next to it).

Re: Lachstock and Four Turbo Charged Cylinders ['04 NB SE]
Underside of the rocker cover with the baffle covers removed, the exhaust side vents from the centre camber to the outer chamber through a very small hole. Drill this hole out as big as you can to allow gasses to escape quicker but at a slower velocity. Reseal all the covers and you're done. I also got a larger outlet drilled and welded on while I was in there. But best to do the simple boost gauge tapped to the oil cap test to see if you even need to.
(Side note: looking at the coil holes, have a guess which cylinder detonated itself to death )

Onwards and upwards
I had a chinwag with Daz during the week about the latest work, mostly about the US components designed for left hand drive
I’ll most likely be down Daz’s shop on Wednesday too.... see you then mate.

Roadrunner, thank you, that's very interesting and something to look into for sure!
Daffy, I kept meaning to call you and tell you I'd be coming down Wednesday (and then forgetting - I'm getting old!) I should be there a little after lunchtime on Wednesday.
