ok another update. i jumped it yesterday afternoon and ran it for about half an hour then took it for a quick spin around the block.

turned it off and still wouldn't crank. but no clicks, like half a crank.

anyway i found my better charger that is automatic and can charge from 0v.

hopefully tomorrow we are winning.

Yeah just idling won't charge much, usually a good 1/2 hour drive at least. Sounding like it could have a stuffed cell though that it had nothing much after what you did.

Just take it to an auto electrician, they can confirm if it's in good health ot not.

5 years old and hasn't been charged for one year. It will have dropped a cell or two. IT'll hold charge for 15 minutes, but then discharge and wont have the cranking amps tp start a car.

As others have said, the time wasted so far on this so far, you wouldn't had an answer from any battery place in 2 minutes. Much quicker.

A lot of trickle chargers will just trip if the battery voltage is below about 10v they can't handle the current flow when the battery voltage is low.If you can borrow a charged battery connect it to the charger and, with jumper leads, also to the flat battery, the voltages will equalize and the charger will bring both of them back to fully charged.

Most trickle chargers which I have used, won't charge a completely flat battery. Because watts are a product of amps and volts, if the voltage is nil or very low 2-3 V for example, the amps required to put any charge into the battery overload the charger and trip the overload protection. The most simple fix is usually a jump start from another vehicle, run it long enough to get the voltage over 11 or so and then put the trickle charger on for a couple of days. Unfortunately, unless the battery is fairly new, once they have been drained to that extent they are usually stuffed.

9.6 volts after being charged indicates a shorted cell. Each cell is about 2.2 volts in a healthy charged lead acid battery. I reckon you likely have 1 or 2 shorted cells, time to go shopping for a battery. Always disconnect the battery if the car isn't being used for anymore than a few weeks.

Lets keep it going for a few more years until he needs to replace his replacement battery.

No. We're all still waiting for him to take it to a battery shop and get it tested for free in two minutes
