Re: SP or ND2?
Those sales statistics really emphasise how the expected arrival of the next generation/upgrade impact the sales of the current model.
Maybe Mazda shouldn't release ANY information and simply spring the new generation/version onto the market to maintain sales of the existing model?
... or would that mean that buyers would simply hold off purchasing until a new generation/version is released?

Re: SP or ND2?
I think buyers know now, it's not just Mazda, all manufacturers do a re-fresh after 3-5 years. But I think the main drop off is that the product isn't fresh anymore.
I've heard Toyota plan to do a revision every year on the Supra, so each year brings a fresh change to the car to entice buyers. Kind of sucks for the early movers though. If I were Supra hunting, and I do like them (mostly), I'd be holding my wad until a manual trans comes along.
I think the ND is a great car, very true to the MX-5 lineage. They should bring out a halo version to drum up interest again, make a higher power version, not just a different paint colour. Not everyone will spring for the top model, but it will bring the spot light back and sales will get a bump.
Though the ND sales have tanked the hardest, they also had the biggest peak, and I know I see more of them on the road than any other model, they're definitely successful. I hope Mazda continues to back the model.

Re: SP or ND2?
Thanks for the sales figures in Au and the graph. I reckon its pointing to the ND in decline. I certainly dont share any enthusiasm about the car and it fails as a tourer whereas the previous models were better equipped. I never would have thought that a soft top is todays choice and the odd expensive version with retractable top but sides in place is a compromise. USA is probably the answer to what Mazda might do. Is it possible for Mazda to make any more changes to this platform which will really make a difference ?

Probably true when bought new. My car was $167,000 new in 2004 with the options fitted (everything on a Porsche is optional), so there wouldn’t have been many new Boxster buyers driving them daily. As a second hand buy 14 years later in the $25-30,000 range, they would be a great daily (assuming I was still working and needed to commute). Parts and service costs are high, but the thrill would be worth it.

Re: SP or ND2?
one thing i was wondering with the nd sales numbers - 2019 list the model as ND1. Is this an error and should read ND2? or ND1 & ND2, or are we missing the sales figures for the ND2?
Cheers,

Re: SP or ND2?
IMO Sales figures Are also dwindling due to the price jump.
You could buy a 2.0 for $34k when first out, now the cheapest 2.0 is $41k (+20%) and the top of range is $50k....

The answer to the ND is not that it is a bad car, it is just painted in the most boring colours, apart from soul red.
Put some excitement back into the colours and trim it is a sports car not a refrigerator.

+1
That was one of the reasons that the Toybaru was so successful, new, good-looking, fun and incredibly cheap (coming from Toyota, they could have charged an extra 10 grand for it and made similar/more $$$).
I also agree with comment regarding ND colours, Soul Red looks great, there's too many greys and most colours are very bland (not as bad as some of the Hyundai colours though, most of theirs look more like undercoats - and "Baby Boy Blue" for their i30N hot hatch, WTF were they thinking, who's your target clientele you marketing wankers?)
Those who bought the initial 2.Ol ND must be happy they didn't wait for the ND2 and many that were waiting will probably wait longer until 2nd hand ND2's become available to fall more in line with their budget. After living in the US and seeing how cheap their new cars are compared to ours, I can't justify the cost of buying a new car and immediately taking the massive depreciation hit when I drive it out the door so that's what I'd do.

I don't think I've ever seen any Boxsters at all in my supermarket carpark. But then I can't recall seeing a parked ND as well.

It's an error - here's the article dated 7 Jan 2020 that that the 442 was mentioned in as all MX5 sales for 2019: https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/2019-p ... -car-sales

Make the car seem new again? Mazda already has the answer with the NA. Also the 30A model.
A limited run of 1000 in a 'hero colour' every year.
BRG with tan interior.. that's what we are waiting for
Merlot.
Sunburst Yellow.
Winning Blue.
All these will pull a premium because they appeal and also rarity value.

Me neither, Bruce, but up here in the sticks where men are men and animals are nervous, all you see in the supermarket parking lots are 4 WDs and SUVs and only the Hairdressers park their MX5s next to one of those as you can guarantee a dent in your door when you return.
There is one 911 in the whole of Central Queensland and no Boxsters or Caymans as far as I know. That's because only Pussies drive Porsches. Real men drive 4WD Utes donchaknow.

Come to Camberwell and they're more common than Camry's.
Only brand new ones though, the leases expire after 3 to 5 years hahaha.

I'd actually consider buying new if they still had a base 2.0. The dealers I've spoken to have said that after the initial sales demand was fulfilled the demand for base models dropped off and most cars were GTs. And now that the RF is out that's outselling the soft top pretty convincingly.
A different dealer said that shifting base model 1.5s is almost impossible and that he had one for 18 months that he ended up selling at a loss.

Re: SP or ND2?
Speaking of Boxsters I just picked a new one up for high 30's from a private seller - MY09, Manual, 75km's, Porsche warranty until Jan next year (extendable till 2024), full Porsche dealer service history.
Owner was crazy about keeping it tidy, top has no stains, no scratches on the paint and he even put a generic mat over the Porsche mats to avoid wearing them out (he seemed really sad to see it go and previously planned it to be a forever car).
It's the facelift 987.2 so has the newer style engine (same as newer 981's) with no known issues and multiple oil pickups so it can be tracked relentlessly.
Shows you what you can get for sub new ND money if you look around. Shouldn't depreciate a ton either as these 987.2's are sought after.
From pickup today:
