Hail Damage - Suggestions

My NA 1.8 was damaged in the recent hail storm in Melbourne.

Shannon’s are being very opaque and seem to be keen on a cash settlement (circa $5-6k) rather than repairs.

The car prior to damage was in excellent condition.

The damage is primarily to the bonnet with a couple of dents on boot.

What are you thoughts about how hard it would be to source a bonnet and boot and get them spray painted to match car?

Bonnet & boot should be pretty easy to source. Someone here may be able to help or could try Jan Micallef on the MX-5 Facebook page. I'm not on FB so don't have any other details. If that's all that's required, seems a strange offer from Shannons.

There are dent pullers who are very good at fixing hail damage.

Danny, thanks for your note. Been assessed by a PDR assessor, seems not confident they can address the damage. Perhaps the alloy panels. Seems best bet is to source replacement bonnet / boot lid and get resprayed. If anyone can recommend a panel repair place in Melbourne who I can discuss the cost of respirating panels (to match paint) would be appreciated.

A bonnet is going to cost at least $500 to paint without removing dents - add the boot and that might double it. Then if the boot and bonnet are not repairable you buy used parts which need to be painted. They will repaint normally based on the colour code- if the car is red expect it will have faded. Acclaim in Croydon ( Mark is the boss) - Dorset road are very competent painters - (visit or call during the week) and no surprises to them about older cars. Also Panel shop Ferntree Gully - adjacent to the station cemetery side - he is very reasonable and proper car guy and he also is dent fixer- worth the talk e.g. on a Sat morn. That will answer your questions they may be able to source panels . Matching paint- is certainly doable- e.g. Eastern Auto Paints Bayswater. The painter will not expect you to supply the paint- i.e. better they source it. If you can get a payout from Shannon they may offer you the car at $X. What they are offering may be ok - they probably do not want the car. An MX5 is something you might want to stick with- probably not depreciating like most cars.

I have finally been paid out by the Insurer. They didn’t want to undertake the repair do I have been paid out. I was liaising with the service provider at Ringwood but we couldn’t agree on a quotation, so I need to look elsewhere. Any current suggestions on a crash repairer?

My neighbour had a badly hail damaged car repair done by a dent specialist and it looks like new. I've had many dents over the years done by a guy in Peakhurst, Sydney. He did perfect repairs on dents others "specialists" said was beyond fixing the paintfree way. It does come down to the skill of the operator.

Aluminium is too difficult to push dents out of so dent guys avoid them. Thus the panels will need replacing and thus a lot of paint as the adjacent panels will also need paint. Thus the reason why the high quotes.

I mentioned the panel shop near the Ferntree Gully station- he does all sorts of cars including classics and does dent removal. You did not mention the payout but it should cover a reasonable panel shop quote. If a panel shop is interested they will quote pretty much on the spot. There are plenty of panel shops in the Eastern suburbs. reality is that a dent can be pushed out its cheaper than traditional panel beating - many just source new or secondhand panels. I had a boot damaged ( not really repairable ) and Shannons would not allow the repairer to source a new one so it was a short wait for a excellent used one.
