Munted stud and whats this leaking?

Hello all.

I have a munted stud from the intake manifold. of course it was the last one I was taking out. any tips for getting it out? the thread outside the head is badly cross threaded. do I need to get a die to re thread it? i can't get nuts on it anymore to try and take it out.

also this thing under the intake manifold is leaking oil. what is it and should I replace it? assume so.

Looks like your oil pressure sender unit.
If it’s leaking oil. I’d replace it.
I’ve got a spare one. Come & get it. I’m in Leichhardt

Could also be your knock sensor

That's the knock sensor. The oil pressure sender is just below it.

Never heard the expression "munted" I guess that equates to mangled ... In extreme cases where a stud/ bolt cannot be readily removed you can buy am 'easy out" but that may also require drilling a hole in the stud centre. If the thread is damaged in the head it might then need a thread tap run up it. You need to know the thread size and pitch. If the oil pressure gauge is the item that goes in it then you can work out the thread.

Down in Adelaide we have a guy called “Mr Thread.” He repairs stuff like this and makes it his business to handle all things threaded. Maybe there’s a similar business in your neck of the woods?

thanks i am going to replace both while i am down there.

the knock sensor is 111 bucks which sucks but the oil pressure switch is 14 bucks.

any tips on the munted stud?

its the thread outside the head to be clear. might need to get a die to clean it up.

Aren't you replacing the studs? If there's no other studs in the way, then stilsons should remove it.

I agree with RS2000, Vise grips should remove the stud, maybe heat the alloy in that area with a blowtorch if it doesn't unscrew easily.
Source a long 8mm dia x 1.25mm pitch bolt and cut the head off to length, use 2 nuts (tightened together) to tighten your new stud into the head.

Hint...
Check the length that'll screw into the head - to the bottom of the hole, plus manifold / gaskets / washers / nut, before cutting.
Applying thread locking liquid product optional.

i have araldited some nuts to the stud with the hope of that being enough to get it out. don't have a welder or I would weld a nut to the stud and be done with it. will report in the morning if it works. no blow torches unfortunately there is some fuel lines off ATM and don't want to risk it.

As mentioned, stillsons / vice grips would be first thing I;d try.

If that fails (and assuming you can get in there), filing two opposing flats onto the stud and using an adjustable spanner sometimes does the trick.

hmmm, gives me an idea that filing suggestion.

i could get my multi tool and cut a channel for a flat head screw driver bit in a drill.

fortunately the new studs have an allen head on them.

will try it all tomorrow!

ok so the glue worked just fine. i basically just forced the two nuts on the stud and glued them together.

got the oil pressure switch from supercheap and ordered the knock sensor from this place - it was the cheapest i could find.
