Assuming your spring rates are in order, normally you would run more camber on the front than the rear. Yours appears to be the opposite..

Also was that alignment done with you in the car? Hoping not, as there is a fair difference L to R camber wise, (esp rear which is 3deg L,2.5degR) which could have been the aligner approximating for when you are in the drivers seat and the RHS drops giving more camber.
If you were in the seat then I'd be getting them to do it again and be more accurate this time..

Thanks for the reply rascal.

The spring rates are pretty stiff (maybe 9/12), I'll try to get hold of some other options to try in the future. Next priority will hopefully be to fit a full cage so I can be safe and consider getting into racing.

I wasn't in the car when the alignment was done. I am unsure of how much adjustment is in the stock suspension but I do have some offset bushes for the front that I haven't yet fitted for a bit more adjustment.

Also, got my eye on how this plays out... https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=706869

Alignment looks very similar to mine, camber v close, toe the same, you have more castor, we are running the same spring rates.
Can you run wider rims? Maybe some time in fatter tyres?
I looked into a turbo, a lot, and concluded it would be a proper rabbit hole! I ended up deciding I’d be better off buying a faster car to start with.

Yes I do have the 17x9 RPF1's and will invest in the biggest A050's that will fit (likely 245/40/17) next year. This year I have been on tyres I purchased second hand for a few events and they were all well past useful life for hardness.

I did a side by side comparison with our fastest club 4 cylinder. He is on used Z221's but they are 265/35/18 on his 86. I am unsure why but I have higher speeds on the straights without a tune (100kw at the tyres) and his is tuned (123kw at the tyres). Could be down to gearing and tyre size.

I figure developing this car long term will be ok for me as the platform seems great. I don't really want to go back to a heavier car. Tinkering and building will be more part of my journey next year as I get a bit more space. :D

What is your next vehicle Custardtart?

86s are 200kg heavier which could explain it...

Interesting comparison, but the telemetry & cars are being crossed up. The 86 is 1 km/h higher at the end of S/F straight, & 5 km/h higher at end of the previous straight.

Could be the speed on EXIT to the previous corner.

So many possible variables. I’ve now done 3 test days each on a set of 225x45x16 Khumo 710’s and 235x40x17 NT01’s. I’ve concluded there’s a fair bit of drag from the wider tyre but being wider I get the a tiny bit more overall grip as the narrower but essentially grippier 710’s. I’ve produced identical lap times on both tyres twice each. BUT the 710’s offer much more feel and are much nicer to drive on the limit. I’m saving for a set of AO50’s to replace the 710’s and Nt01’s. Someone buy my RPF1’s with the Nitto’s - it is Christmas after all

Thanks all for your replies.
Yes my bad, mixed up on the speeds. I think overall the MX5 out accelerates the 86 still.

I have a better video this time, two drivers, one car. Pro vs Amateur. Michael (https://www.facebook.com/michaelclemente15/) who is joining TCR next year took my car out for a session and this is what happened...

Plenty I can learn from this. :D

That's a really cool vid. Credit to you for getting so close. Interesting to see a direct comparison. what do you think the main take away is for you?

Absolutely heaps to learn here. (In this video I set my laptime before he did his)

The main obvious bits are turn 2 line he carries more speed and the final S bends before coming into the main straight. If I do those at the same rate he did on his lap I may be able to get into a 57 soon.

I am well aware he can optimise his time a lot too, he only had about 7 or 8 laps total. I think he would have had some adjustments done and gone faster again.

The feedback he gave on car setup was impressive too after the drive. Doing some things to control the pitching of the car before coming into the long sweeper. This could be tyre pressures, damper settings, etc... on the existing setup.

Bring on 2020 :NC:

So reading this you should be keeping the NC I hope. So much potential in the car.

Well I haven't had a sniff so yes I'm keeping it for now and postponing my new build (for now).

Well in the off season we got a little bit done:
New Windscreen
Oil change
New Tyres, A050 Medium 245/40/17
Raise coilovers 10mm
Wheel alignment

This gave a pretty nice setup for the first round of Winton Sprints for 2020. Grip on this setup was amazing, I am still learning how hard it can be pushed. New PB laptime at Winton of 1:39.09 in Session 3, video below.

Cheers.

Great progress. How do you find the tyres handle at the limit?
