Awesome work on getting it back together mate. Your lifter clearances (I'm assuming solids) would get a little tighter depending on how enthusiastic you were with the lapping tool. Not by much but measurable.
Can i come to your shed and play with that valve grinder thingy?
Can it tip the valve ends? Makes sub installment so much easier..

That's two of us! I'm looking at the next round of school holidays to put it in, I want to wire up the extra injectors and stuff while I'm at it.
I've been offered the use of the Girlfriend's old man's panel van. "You know, in case something goes wrong and you run out of time" - I'm going to take him up on it, it just sits there and nobody loves it, but it's a HQ(-ish era) with a 253 and side pipes. I feel, as an Australian, "chose not to drive a v8 panel van with side pipes" should be grounds for being evicted from the island.

1) I didn't even think of that! I had it in my mind that "remove material == increase clearance" but now that you've said it, and I picture it, lapped valves do get me closer to spec. If I get brave, I could re-face and then re-lap the valves, and end up right on the money. (but I probably won't)

I'm yet to test it against an actual valve face (just the back-cuts pictured previously). it seemed to be slightly out of whack by stuff-all of a millimeter on some valves, but it could have been user error. it was probably user-error.

Slow and steady wins the race, according to the story about the confident turtle and the arrogant rabbit. I'd like to say that's why I'm not finished yet. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
I kept forgetting to buy an alternator, because in my mind I already had one. What I actually had was a starter motor. Similar concept (magnets and electric current) but entirely different execution. When I did finally order one, I forgot to pick it up for almost a week. I'll have nobody accuse me of staying on-task with this!
So, now I need a fuel supply solution. the VVT Swap thread over on mt.net says "combine bits of fuel rail make one that works" .... I don't have all of the parts I need just kicking about though.... so, I've been thinking (ie; I saw a youtube video on exactly this) "A Radium rail and AFPR is a good idea!" - the other option being the FM rail.
i was thinking -6 from the factory hard line into whatever rail, -6 to the reg, -6 to the flex, and finally -6 to the return. I am open to other suggestions.
latest additions: beavis motorsport 36-2 trigger wheel. beavis/bartune ls2 coil kit, bartune flex fuel kit, and i can't find two of the crank pulley bolts. But I did paint the TDC and -10deg lines on the timing belt cover, so I have been working on the engine. the 36-2 trigger wheel was sliightly too small, so I 'clearanced" it with some sandpaper, taking the paint off. and it fit nicely. so i gave it a lick of paint to hide the exposed metal annnddd..... it didn't fit again. so I sanded the paint back off and installed it. I'm choosing not to dwell on how I managed to implement that thought process.
Some ebay store was having a 20% off sale, and were selling 1.6L Exedy HD clutches at a good price, and somehow I also ended up with a set of superpro bushes which were also undergoing the 20% discount treatment. Do I want poly bushes? Ehh... I'm not sure I do, they're not made out to be conductive to ride quality, and even having the stock suspension in the car a few months ago, the local roads don't exactly have a "nice" quality to start with. I'll try anything once, though. Who knows, new bushes of any description might make life better than my unknown-age-but-at-least-100k bushes.
I think that's all the things for now.

I overheated my car this morning. Sitting in the driveway. Idling.
It turns out my fans weren't coming on when the system was up to temp. When did this start? I don't know. Does it explain the seemingly marginal cooling system? Yes.
It would overheat in town, but only sometimes, and never really on days that it "should" overheat. Actually, since putting the new radiator in a few years ago, it's never overheated when it "should", only when ... I don't know.
Well, I think I know. Well, I don't know, but I have a theory.
My fans come on together. I don't think they've always done this, I vaguely recall setting their on/off temps one day, idling in the driveway, and they worked.
Living in the country, most of the time when I'm going somewhere, I'm doing it at 100km/h, so there's always air moving over the radiator, and it never gets (or seemed to) up to temp in my short drive to work. The heater would be warm, but not hot - which is very upsetting in winter.
The ecu was set to turn the CLT fan on with the AC fan. but it seems to *only* turn the CLT fan on if the AC fan is on (which only comes on when the compressor is on). My thinking was that it would turn both fans on when it needed the AC fan, and just the CLT fan when it needed to drop some CLT temperature. This seems not to be the case.
I've currently got it configured to turn the AC on when it needs fans, and it at least makes fans spin. I was troubleshooting why the 'fan' light was on in TS, but there were no fans spinning - but the laptop battery went flat on me, I'd wasted most of the battery updating the firmware and checking things worked. Downgrading the firmware is an option too, but this was happening on the previous version too

That's a sign of something wrong.
ECU or not.
The thermostat should be staying closed until the coolant is up to it's 82deg or whatever it's supposed to be.
The car should warm up and get to temp regardless of fans/speed/radiator efficiency
If it's not warming up on a drive, even at 100kph, that says to me the thermostat is stuck open (or it's not sealing properly and letting the coolant circulate with the thermostat closed)

Where have I been?
Well, Tasmania for a start, took the car over for a week a couple of weeks back, it was awesome - I did something in the order of 2500kms for the week.
Start of the road to Hellyer Gorge:
Aside from that, not much, just being a hermit. The Lady-friend kicked me out, we were on different trajectories it turns out. I'm not upset, and I don't think she is either.
I bought a house, 2 bedrooms, powered small shed, decent car port, enough yard to build a bigger shed at some point, pretty cheap, close enough to work that I can ride my pushy and not die. It's my first house - was scary at first, but now it's no different to renting. My only advice: If you're living with your mother in law to save money, try and move it out before it breaks your relationship
Last summer I put some cut up windshield insulator thingys under the carpet to attempt to mitigate some heat coming up from the bottom of the car on hot days, it's still here, so it musn't be too bad.
I also attempted to make a headliner to mitigate some of the heat from parking the car in the sun at work all day - it didn't even make it to lunch, so that wasn't as successful. I'll be trying Dynaliner this summer.
I still haven't put the motor in yet ...
...and that's it!

This is a good option. They also sell some fitting kits to help bolt up to the particular chassis (i.e fuel hard line) set up you have - I have the NB motor with full fuel return a la NA6 setup, using stock NA6 FPR.
