50% Power steering fluid.
Never used it myself

I got them out with a three leg puller, so all good.

Thanks Shane, I put some tension on it with a puller and then a couple of taps and it came free

For interest sake, here is the failure - it ended up being the axle shaft itself at the splines where it enters the CV joint. The joint itself appears intact.
The other end of the axle where it attaches to the hub also has visible fractures - this axle was going to fail somewhere...
