Just lost 5th on an NB 5 speed. Any suggestions?
As per the title, I'm wondering if there is a known easily fixed solution to this before I start looking for (yet) another gearbox.
Was quietly motoring into town yesterday when 5th gear basically disappeared. No noises, no crunches, no symptoms. It's like it just transformed itself into a 4 speed. There's not even an obvious gate for 5th any more. Everything else works fine.

Under 100rwkw and I haven't raced it on this box. It's just a sunny day cruiser now.

Is the gearlever going into "5th" as normal, or is it just refusing to go into that slot?
I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

Bleed the clutch slave cylinder? My Nissan 5 speed lost first gear due to air in the slave cylinder.

Nope. It's refusing to go into a slot. I can barely even work out where the slot is.
Edit: reverse is fine though

No, slave and master are fairly new and it doesn't have that sort of feel to it. As you say though blocking 1st and reverse is typical when the hydraulics aren't right. Thinking it's either a selector issue (hopefully fixable, especially if someone has done it before) or a cog refuses to slide (ie terminal with my skills).

Pull the centre console out, remove the rubber boot (probably needs replacing anyway), and remove the gearstick. Look for the plastic ring/boot thingy on the end. Inspect the hole the boot goes into, and the space all around and underneath the bucket that sits in.
What you are looking for is something, possibly a bit of that plastic thingy, that is obstructing the movement of the gearshift.
Fingers crossed ...

Good suggestion, Ed. I'd only been thinking about something further into the selector unit. Worth a try.

This is my 4th gearbox, Stefan, original block but 4th head also. Operator error in the heat of battle took out the first three but I'm blameless with this one.

Re: Just lost 5th on an NB 5 speed. Any suggestions?
I'm confused. I just tried shifting gears for a while in the shed. If I play around with it for a few minutes then I can get 5th easily but then I can't get reverse. So if I fiddle around for a while more I can get reverse but not 5th. I can see this is going to be fun.
Is it possible Mazda was buying their 5 speeds from Landrover or Fiat?

Your 4th gearbox has only 4 gears. So if you replace it with a 5th gearbox you will have 5 gears...

In which case I could sell you my phone number and use the money to buy a 5 speed and a 6 speed and then sell the 5 speed. Or alternatively just use the phone number to buy a whole car.
