Upgraded NB axles - local options?

Postby The American » Mon Aug 05, 2019 8:59 am

Hi all,
Is anyone aware of a local axle/halfshaft maker that can/does supply an upgraded option for the NB?

I know the SE axles are larger, but I’d prefer to avoid also needing to rebuild the diff to accept them.

There is a Brisbane dealer for the US made drive shaft shop axles, so that option is there.

I could also call them a consumable and simply replace with stock and keep spares, but I’d rather finish events (yesterday I was .2 away from an outright podium finish and then pop...)

Here’s the moment the drivers side called it quits:

Yes. So bummed. The guy that took 3rd place outright for the event deserved it, and he would have gone quicker if his car had lasted the day. He was driving a WRX and his last run before he destroyed his clutch in the morning was a 44.07. I was at a 44.33 and still improving by one or two tenths each run. If I hadn’t broken an axle, I might have just clawed my way onto the podium.

Ordered a set of Drive Shaft Shop axles:

Watching the video again, you can hear a metallic rattle and clang just as the car launches in first gear. I initially thought this noise was the starter moving the steel wheel chock on the bitumen, but now I suspect it was the beginning of the CV disintegrating, and it popped completely when I released the clutch in 2nd gear...

I made a couple of local inquiries round my way- there is a fella that builds custom V8 trikes that can knock up some modified axles, but the cost of custom build can also creep up pretty quick, even with being locally built, however, just getting a little off track one of the guys I spoke to suggested that the hilux diff and axle modded set up may be a workable option for MX5’s, 32 spline strong and a big variety of ratio options and easily accessible- always good to have possible outside the box options.

Sounds like I need to redo my list of spare parts kept on hand...

My troubles are undoubtedly from the number of hard launches that my car does on fairly soft tyres. This event alone had about 40.

I was relieved that it wasn’t the gearbox, as that upgrade path is going to be expensive!

Now I know why the internet is full of stories about trying to remove axles from hubs.... :|
