thanks for your advice and feedback

I've had a busy weekend so just managed to remove it now...
Below are pics so when you say the internal seal is gonesters is that the little whole on the inside bottom side of the in the below pics
My bro was saying that its the seal/gasket was bad as there was corrosion on the upper side
@rs2000 - I reckon you are right as i can see coolant staining in the little whole thingy hehe

Essentially if this pump has failed in what is premature imho its a little disappointing
I complained to parts guy and he was like well with that many years and so little km's things can still break etc as coolant protects but still corrodes... I was like aren't pumps meant to go for more than 100kms

Lastly is the gasket maker silicon around the actual gasket problematic?

The reverse side of where the drip was appearing in your earlier front on photos is the bottom of that oblong hole (half covered by the gasket). That's the exit point of the weep hole, or more correctly weep passageway with theses pumps.
I guess it's possible that the gasket that seals the mounting face around the impeller was leaking directly above this point, making it look like the coolant was coming down the weep passageway?
I wouldn't use silicon with a solid paper gasket. Use something like Permatex No.3 or Loctite No.3

Yea not sure exactly but I got a new pump and belts anyways hehe

I try to avoid silicon where possible, & wouldn't use it with a gasket. Most auto stores have Permatex no.3, better known as Aviation form a gasket. Great stuff

yea the search didn't find any no3's but they are there

so you are saying that i should not use the actual gaskets that come with the new water pump, as all the guides did not say this?

Definitely NOT. Use the gasket & thin coat all surfaces if using something like Permatex aviation.
Silicones are usually for replacing gaskets. If you read the instructions with the stuff you bought, it sounds like a gasket is not used.

Haven't bought any high temp silicone or gasket maker as yet.

I'm just trying to make sure I use a good sealant before I find time to put my engine back together lol

Just to be clear, my 'definitely not' was me saying that I did not mean that you leave out the gasket. Use the gasket with a suitable sealant is the way I'd go.

sweet as that's what i've done previously and what is suggested through many guides

was reading the instructions of some sealants and they say to fit but not fully torque the bolts straight away and wait for full cure time of 24H before final torquing, do people recommend this?

I think you'll find those instructions are for silicone in place of gaskets. Not for me.

yea the permatex no3 says;
Use brush to apply a thin, even coat to each surface. Allow to air-dry a fewminutes before fastening the parts into position. If thinning is necessary, add 188 proof denatured alcohol. For use on most types of gaskets, machined surfaces and screw thread connections of airplane and automobile engines.

I've never needed to thin it. The downside of Permatex no.3 & a gasket is that you have to coat 4 surfaces.

If you want to do away with the gasket & use silicon, ThreeBond Super Sealer is a good product that many people swear by. The instructions on the tube say to apply a bead to one surface & torque straight away. It's the grey tube at the bottom of this page:

so has anyone used the permatex no3 thing on this job before?

as i've been reading all the "miata" online guides and they all say to use the permatex ultra grey/black with the gaskets etc and that it works awesomely...

wont have time to reassemble till saturday so just trying to line it all up

as an update I got the no3 gasket sealer not "maker" as most guides say they use and trust there favorable "gasket maker" but it does seem weird to use a gasket if applying a gasket maker... so it would be like using three gaskets?

anyways I'll stop posting till I actually finish the job this weekend :|
