Changed muffler- worth a retune?

Postby Custardtart » Wed Jul 17, 2019 6:46 pm

I’ve just swapped the oem muffler and mid pipe for a more sporty one on my NC. Is it worth getting another dyno session?

Only if it has been about 12 months and you just want a check tune.

Having dríven it now for a while with the new exhaust system it’s running better than ever and has definitely picked up a fair few extra horsepower. Can’t feel the need for a tune but I’d guess it’s running leaner now

How did you go about choosing make and model for the exhaust? I'm looking to upgrade my 2003 MX-5 and can't find many options. I'm leaning towards a full system Racing Beat.

I already had a GWR header but it was rubbing in the steering column when on track so I needed as much clearance between the header and steering column as possible and had wanted the Racing Beat but couldn’t find anywhere in Aus that had stock so I widened the search and saw the Tomei which was perfect and local.
When I went to pick it up the shop owner up sold me on the mid pipe too. TBh the oem mid pipe is supposed to be very efficient but there you go, I’m a sucker for bling
The muffler was easy, everyone says the SuperQ is the one to get if you want sporty without the drone NC’s are known for and Chris Gough at MX5 parts was very good to deal with.
I’m no expert in NB’s but apart from the usual suspects of Flyin Miata and Goodwin Racing you could look at Tomei, Maruha, Car Make Corns and potentially a locally custom made one.

If you feel it is running leaner, I would go with the idea of a tidy up tune- just to save on any potential long term damage. I always recommend to anyone who does any engine mods to invest in a good air/fuel and oil pressure gauge too, so it’s easier to monitor your engine’s health.
