Re: Stolen ND, Brisbane
An update, car came to the attention of pol air and was seen traveling at high speed on the M3 on Brisbane southside, tire deflation devices deployed and offender attested on May 31st.
Now I have to wait until its released from police towing compound to see what damage has occurred (arresting officer said, exterior and interior damage).

I would ask the insurer to write it off (even though they would want to fix it) due to the visible damage and unknown engine damage.

Bloody grubs. I'm sorry for you. It's such a violation to have someone come and just take something from you! Would you even want the car back after this? I'd probably want it written off and the money to buy a new one.

I wouldn't even want to get into the car - the druggie could've left needles anywhere (the car will have warning tape on the glass).

Yea that’s sh*t. But who in their right mind takes on Police on a freeway in an unmodded MX5?

It has to have a "sharps inspection" before I can see it.

How would I ask for it to be written off, if the damage is less than the payout value? Has anyone had experience with this? Insurer says they do a full "mechanical inspection" but how would they do that?

Not sure if I want it back or not, its the only car I've ever had from new. I don't think they are going to be paying out the amount to buy new again.

It will be a fight with the insurer. Kinda wish the thief dropped a.match in it.
I hope the police dog bit him in the balls.

Re: Stolen ND, Brisbane
It's at my friends panel shop (choice of repairer on my policy thankfully), turned out to be minor damage to the front and rear bars. So they are being replace, and as a bonus I get 4 new tires as the ones on it were spiked. There's also some minor cosmetic scratches to the interior plastic which are being replaced. I should get it back in a week or so.

Sounds like a reasonable outcome all things considered...

All things considered that is a good outcome, could of been a whole lot worse. Shame it happened though.
Is a mechanical inspection included in the insurance claim?

Yes, that was the first thing the company did after getting it from the police holding yard. Although I'm not to sure what or how they can do an "inspection". I queried this and asked for the report to be sent to me. They did a compression test (all normal) and "checked" the gearbox and diff. I asked how this was done, replied, "they checked the oil". I ask how this was done? Lots of silence on the phone, eventually saying they don't actually "check" anything to do with the gearbox, just a road test. Same for clutch plate and LSD clutch pack, eventually admitting they don't "check" them either (how could they even?). I need to check the fine print in the policy about warranty.
There wasn't any signs of scraping underneath though (I checked this my self at my repairers). And they also sent the alignment specs they used so I have to compare to my last alignment.
Sometimes I wish I didn't know anything about cars or care for them.
