Brake fluid colour

Postby SIB » Thu May 23, 2019 2:47 pm

I change brake fluid annually, so about 4000km and the odd track day.
Use Castrol React dot 4 which is pale yellow. Would be helpful to change to a different colour so I know when to stop bleeding. Any advice please on suitable brands with a different colour. Did trial and error previously with Nulon, but was the same colour.
Thanks

SuperCheap brand is a nice shade of green (I consider all same rated brake fluids to be OK).

bendix is a bright blue colour. I use that to flush out the old fluid, then flush through again until the new 'yellow' fluid is clean (Motul RBF600).

bit of a waste but at least I know it's done.

When I change fluid and I want to be thorough about it I drain the old fluid and use a pressure bleeding system to blow air through the system. And to be really thorough, push back the caliper pistons first and hold tham back with some new pads or similar packing pieces, so there is no old fluid sitting behind the pistons. Then put in the fresh fluid and bleed.

Not knocking your idea, just putting another method on the table.

This is a great idea. I just checked all my old stocks. Now I know why I have a problem. They're all pale yellow!

Summarising so far:

Castrol React DOT 4 - pale yellow
bendix - bright blue
Motul RBF600 - yellow
SuperCheap - nice shade of green
Penrite SuperDOT 4 - very pale yellow, almost clear
Repco DOT 4 - pale yellow
Nulon SuperDOT 4 - pale yellow

Thanks all for your input. Will go with one of the coloured ones suggested, but totally respect your dedication Hoolio.

I just pump one corner until I empty the res. Then pour in a cheapo of different colour.

Then go around each corner and pump a few time to allow the cheap colour to get into each pipe. Empty out the res again of the cheapo stuff and fill with good stuff.

Then go back to the original corner and begin proper process for each corner.

My Castrol Reacto DOT4 is 10 months old, it’s done 3 track days and 3000km’s and is now a very dark brown and in need of a change. Surprised it hasn’t lasted longer.
