Gearbox and Diff Oil Quantities

Postby madmort » Thu May 16, 2019 11:22 am

The 02' MX5 calls for 2.1 US Quarts for the gear box and 1.06 quarts for the diff. When changing oil would I get away with 2 quarts and 1 quart? Just seems a waste buying the extra bottles if enough oil gets left behind to make up the difference.
Thanks.

FWIW, I just changed the oil in my 01 gearbox and it took almost exactly 1.8L (used graduated pump bottle to fill) before coming out the fill hole.

Likewise, 1.8L for my '02 6 speed, & 0.8 - 0.9L for NB8A diff

I was wondering the opposite - where do you buy oil in quarts in Australia ?

That is a pointless question.
Redline oil and some others list both measures on the bottle.

Just for future reference, I've managed to fill both NA8 and NB8A 5 speeds with 2 qts of Redline each.

Similarly, my NA8 5 speed was filled by 2 quarts of Redline & Torsen 1 diff by 1 quart of Redline.

magna_blue and 93_clubman Thanks. Did you notice any improvement in gearbox gear selection/feel with Redline?

You learn something new every day.

I'm still getting over the joy of recently discovering diesel oil now comes in 7L bottles, no more having piles of random 10L drums scattered throughout the shed, all with 3L left over from every oil change on the Hilux

Did it back in 2006, so car had only done 50k kms, & GB was fine & remained fine. What I did notice recently when clutch was replaced & the mechanic drained the Redline GB & diff oil (without being asked), was that gear selection is not as good cold with the run of the mill Penrite he put in.

I've found the new Penrite Pro Gear GL4 better than the Redline MT90 in my 6 speed.
