How many kays do you drive per year? How much longer do you think you will own the car (realistically)?
Hardly worth getting the whole motor rebuilt if it only needs the head done. You're just throwing money away (or giving it to the next owner).
Yeah could be a fair point. My motorbike is my daily now to fight traffic in the big smoke of melbourne.

I dare say i will be hanging onto it for a long while yet. But it will be becoming more track orientated and a fun weekender, not a daily driver.

If the bottom end is fine then a top end build may be all i get done. Possibly with cams

Sounds like you're going the rebuild route, but in answer to your question, given you already got the BP-05 motor & accessories from a 1996-1997 NA8 with the 16bit ECU then if necessary you should be able to use those on a 1993-1995 BP-05 motor.

So I have had a compression test done and received some quotes.

I called BnB engines Clayton and they quoted me $1500 -$2000 for a full head reco.
They also said that they only do the work on the engine, not the removal and re fit itself. They suggested I go to IWIM Motors (across the road) for that work.

I got a compression test at IWIM Motors which resulted in:
#1 : 205 psi
#2 : 205 psi
#3 : 190 psi
#4 : 205 psi

They said its holding good comp and that almost certainly its the valve stem seals causing the issue. - so a head reco is all thats needed.

IWIM also quoted $1500-$2000 for removing and re fitting the head.

I took the results to BnB engines and they said that IF the sump comes out easy and can therefore replace the piston rings relatively easily that i should probably do that too.

What are people's thoughts on the quotes, the compression test results and the option of doing the rings as well?

I am also thinking that I will get some better performing cams (to suit stock ecu) while all the work is being done.

Also, because the mx5 is no longer a daily i am thinking i will strip weight from it.
This will include fully removing the aircon (should also free up hp). Also de-power the steering rack. The soft top has a rip and is getting old so I will take that out too. Also remove the stereo and other excess weight. If i can get rid of 100kg it should make a noticeable difference to the car.

Later down the track: 6sp gearbox and lighetened flywheel and clutch.

These things will move the car into a more fun weekender / weekend track warrior, rather than a daily.

Reconsideration:

For over $1000 for cams i dont think the few hp will be worth it???

Is that for brand new cams? (ie billets)

talk to either Warren Heath, or Clive Cams.

They both do cam grinding, and can do you a custom grind to suit your needs.

Warren races (or at least did, not sure he still does) an escort with a Mazda BP engine in it, so has plenty of experience with Mazda engines.
from memory Warren charges about $500 for a pair of cams.

Clive does a heap of cars, not sure how much experience he has with Mazdas, so you'd have to speak to him.
Not sure what Clive's pricing is like, haven't spoken to him.

Being regrinds you will need to provide a pair of donor cams to be ground to the new specs, so bear that in mind (although you can probably just get a cheap pair from any 1.8 Mazda 323, since they'll be ground to a new profile anyway. Talk to the cam grinder you choose about what they prefer)

Yeah I had been thinking brand new cams, but you are selling me on a regrind!

Do you think it is still worth it? Will it just shift the power around rather than add power?

Would I be better off spending the money on getting new rings?

I have looked at the regs and classes for local events. Im up S*** creek in an old 1.8L unless I spend big money - so I'm ditching the idea of building it to suit a class.

To wrap up this thread:

I got a full rebuild top and bottom. All new valves (exhaust side was the original issue), bearings and piston rings. Light hone on bores too

Also added a sump baffle and a nitro dann hot side engine mount.

Total: $4700

you will love the solid engine mount. It will make your gearbox so preciice....especialy if you ad a short shift kit.

do be warned. tighten your brakes & drive shaft & many other bolts juts a little extra tight. or check them after 2 weeks of driving.

This was an enjoyable read through on my not quite lunch break, lots of decent advice, helpful chaps and a positive result in the end. Good read and just the right length to indulge in before the boss comes looking!

Edit note: 500th post, woohoo!

Unfortunate the forums are dying a slow death.....everything is on Facebook these days. There are so many randoms on Facebook giving sh*t and un-precisce advice.

its a tragic state of affairs. we have to try to keep these places alive.

some of the big forums in the UAS have also got a lot of instagrammers who talk sh*t to get attention. But thats the way of the new world.
or everybody has an attitude....because you don't search enough

Was that including removal of the motor? In a similar position with my NA8 and just deciding what I want to do. I can remove/refit myself i'm just not keen on touching the internals
