Just checked my ms3 tune for standard coils, 3.6mS Dwell Spark time 0.7 mS. Cranking dwell is 4.5, that's because the voltage is lower while cranking. I don't run E85.

Yes relay on the positive supply side, good idea, that and nice fat wire! My concern with high energy coils is the transistors inside the ECU that actually does the switching on and off, which is on the negative side. OCD maybe, I'm a retired electronics kind of person. Please excuse my paranoia. edit: IIRC I think the transistors used in the MS3 are rated at 5 amps, which is plenty of headroom.

Hmmm....Where I used to work they are oscilliscopes available. I'm thinking one of my ex-colleagues bought a Yaris for his daughter, I'll ask him to have a look at the voltage across the COP primary, it would give a true indication of the dwell time. Not promising anything, but watch this space.

I haven’t, there are some available on EBay but Bosch made in Japan? So I hesitated. Today I had a good look . It turns out my wiring was dodgy. The whole Cops loom was the rewired & soldered how it should have been in the first place. Speed came to my rescue. We have different skill sets . Speeds skill set proved worthy today.
Running sweet.

I will source those bosh Cops when I have money burning a hole in my pocket of if one of the COPs does actually break. I have a pretty strong battery. So for now they are safe enough to use.

Bosch 503 Coils suit Toyota from https://www.efisolutions.com.au/

Also make sure the spark plugs you are using have RESISTORS as these COPS highly susceptible to back feeding from non-resistor plugs... blows the transistor inside.

I thought basically all plugs these days had resistors?

well, ones that fit an MX5 anyway.

Sorry, I meant more that arent all "normal" plugs resisted now?
(like the usual BK5RE and the temps above/below them, rather than strange special order ones)


Would there be any reason to specifically use non-resistor plugs? (in an MX5)

Not really, in a race car you do not have to worry about electrical interference that can disrupt the radio or mobile operation. However it may create noise for the ECU... and damage coils...

However if your leads have the resistor built in then you do not need a resistor plug.

I have learnt a lot about plugs recently when trying to find the Bosch COP's.
