Brembo front brakes (opposed piston design/unique rotor)


Hmmm? Interesting. Better than the passenger car sliding caliper always offered.

Don't mind the colour but to my mind, every dollar over $50K prices the MX5 out of it's natural price category.
It makes it easy for me as I don't like the ND anyway. If I liked it I would probably choose to buy a one or two year-old used car just to get the price down to what I think it's really worth. Then again, I like the Toyota 86...
If you like the Special Edition and it's worth the dollars to you, fine.

agree that the prices of ND's seem to make a once cheap and cheerful car out of budget for many.

Have the new car prices for MX-5s ever been cheap in Australia? When I was buying my first I was looking at new before finding the 6 month old Laguna Blue Clubman that I bought. I was quoted about $46k drive away for a new Clubman in late 94 or early 95. $46k over 20 years ago. Factor in inflation and the price for the ND is probably fairly static or even cheaper now. Even the used one that I bought I paid $33k for and that was a bargain at the time and took a lot of negotiation including literally walking away from the deal. I was 2 blocks away by the time the salesman caught up to me.

I admit there's a lot of good cars you can get for a lot less money than the ND today though I don't think any of them are convertible 2 seat sports cars. That configuration is always going to attract a premium.

The 1989-1990 NA6s at $29550 were competitive, but as you note limited editions & later NA6 & NA8 prices increased significantly. 2015 ND 1.5 prices were also competitive at $31990, but of course the price creep has returned.

Sure, but they were still more than competitive back then because everything else that might have attracted a similar buyer was at least the same or a higher price.

Whether we like it or not, it is all about how particular products are positioned/marketed.
Regardless of whether the R&D and manufacturing costs is greater or the same as a Mazda 3, a "sporty" model will always have a price premium.
In Australia (as opposed to say, the US) government taxes (which are no longer justified given no local industry to protect) blow-out the inequity even further.
for e.g. in the US the new Supra is expected to sell for US$50K which pitches it against big HP domestics like the Mustang, Camaro, Charger and Corvette (or so my US informants tell me.)
A lot of us will refuse to be gouged and elect to buy a demo/used vehicle but of course we deny ourselves the pleasure of getting a new unused vehicle.

Hi, I’m new here, or at least I haven’t visited for years. I’ve owned an NA and an NC but been out of MX5 for ages. I got my invitation yesterday and jumped on it. Any other order holders here from SA?
