Re: BEAVIS' White Track Car
I had the same question. I thought it was turbo trouble, not engine trouble?

Re: BEAVIS' White Track Car
He had a 1st gen TM2 which cracked, I offered a TM2 kit to replace it at my cost but there was a breakdown in communication and he swapped for a Kraken and a GTX turbo.
So now the motor itself has had an issue. I called to ask what happened but I suspect it was just age.

Re: BEAVIS' White Track Car
Sorry if there was confusion, this thread was just behind and I was trying to catch it up. Let me explain...
I didn't realise so many people were paying attention Indeed, the engine and turbo both suffered on the same day.
The car has only had the 1 proper track day at Sandown where it was running great until things started sounding crook later that afternoon.
Initially I 'hoped' that it was just the turbo manifold that was the cause for concern, but I wasn't that lucky and indeed after further investigation the engine has some kind of knock.
I don't know yet exactly what is wrong with the engine (it's still assembled in the car parked), or what caused the issue, it just sounds off. It showed symptoms of hesitation a few times during it's last track event which I think were caused by leaning out, unfortunately the ecu logging wasn't setup right to be able to look back and check that properly. Likewise the car hit over rev a couple of times on downshifts due to driver error which may also have contributed. I don't know if the exhaust leak could also have contributed to any this either... but I don't think so.
I decided I don't want to continue to fuss about with used $300 turbos if it's going to cause another headache in the future, just invest in good parts so the car works and I can drive it. I have yet to work out what I can do engine wise...
Apologies for the slab of text, but hey you asked

Thanks for the update. It really sucks that it all went so wrong so fast. Good luck getting it back up again soon.

Re: BEAVIS' White Track Car
Damn, that sucks Brendan. I guess it's inevitable that things are going to happen when we lean on these cars so hard on track. I'm hoping my engine will hold together for another year or two before needing a rebuild. Unfortunately though, things don't always seem to go to plan.
I guess we'll be seeing some engine tear down and rebuild videos appearing on your Youtube channel soon then.

I think everyone hangs out for your updates. The challenges and the wins make for great content. Keep it up and hope for a $peedy recovery soon.

TIME FOR AN UPDATE - OUT WITH THE "OLD" ENGINE
I think I am well overdue for the obligatory forum thread update.
This is going to be a long story, so get your cuppa tea/coffee/beer and some snacks and sit down for a solid read.
So obviously a lot has happened since the unfortunate events of the sick engine from May 2018, and if you're a frequent viewer of my YouTube videos then some of the information here will be a bit repetitive but bear with me.
First things first, after getting over the mental hurdle that is coming to terms with the situation of my engine being crook, my old man and I pulled the engine from the car to assess the damage.
We stripped the motor down to mostly just the block, pistons and rods. And on first inspection, it all looked pretty respectable.
There was still signs of the factory honing, nothing appeared disastrous, although there was some vertical scoring marks visible on a couple of the cylinder walls so clearly some damage had been done.
Remember this engine did run, but it had what sounded like a bottom end knock. The block in it's stripped state was sent off to be cleaned and inspected and the lovely engine reconditioners introduced us the the source of our bottom end issue...
Once the pistons were removed, we had our first exciting moment, a pair of bananas!
The engine had two bent rods, one bad, and one worse. These are now some nice expensive paperweights. But that's ok because replacements had already been arranged...

Re: BEAVIS' White Track Car
FRESH ENGINE BITS
Naturally, by the time the engine was removed I'd already made a plan on how I wanted to 'fix' things... first part of the plan was upgrading the internals.
So my order of gear from the lovely folk at Trackspeed Engineering in the US made its way to me here in the land down under fairly quickly.
I know many of you will be curious on what 'bits' I went with. My aim was stout and reliable, not all out power or 'big numbers'. This is a car that I want to be consistent and drivable at the limits on the track, so I don't want to be running components at their limits. I also see no issue with having plenty of headroom for future boost increases. So my parts choice had all of that in mind, and naturally I also employed the suggestions of the supplier:

- Supertech 9.5:1 Pistons
- Manly Conrods
- ACL Main & Rod Bearings
- ATI Super Damper
- Boundary Engineering Oil Pump
- Supertech Valve Springs
- and, not specifically for the engine internals, but a Skunk2 throttle body.

Re: BEAVIS' White Track Car
Why 9.5:1 pistons? If you're running E85 full time wouldn't higher comp be better? And if not, I was under the impression that the timing you can run on 98 at 8.6:1 beats out the gains in compression. Other than that, you're running all the goodies I want to go in my engine one day!
Glad it's all coming together, and I really liked your close to one of your recent videos where you thanked your Dad, top bloke!
