Re: NC: Who here is interested in a NC RHD Turbo Kit???
As a discussion starter, here is my list re adding a turbo to a my 2012 NC2 PRHT.
Must
- Produce at least 160 kW atw
- Boost is controlled to avoid damage or abnormal wear to engine internals and drivetrain, under normal road use
- Retain all current features, ie air-con, power-steer, ABS, traction & stability control
- Retain the stock ECU hardware
- Other than additional available performance, must drive and idle like stock, and not overheat in stop-start of highway situations.
- Be legal for registration and insurance in NSW
- Externally discrete installation (eg intercooler not obvious), and of course no "whoosh whoosh" noises!
- Job has a price limit, based on agreed assumptions of vehicle condition and parts & labour costs (eg engine internals are ok, turbo costs $x, manifold requires x hours to make). I must avoid blowouts due to unanticipated issues with fabrication or compliancing.
Desirable
- In-car power adjustment or tune switching
Bonus
- Additional EC functions, eg flat-shifting
- Boost display
It is likely you will have a different list, as we all want different things from our cars.
My NC is a daily driver for my wife and I and it has to be reliable and safe to drive for both of us in variable conditions. We don't need max power or want to drive like idiots, we have an MX-5 race car for that :-)
Anyway, this is my starting point.

Must
- Produce at least 160 kW atw
Easy

Easy
- Retain all current features, ie air-con, power-steer, ABS, traction & stability control
MS3 plug and play runs all of that
- Retain the stock ECU hardware
If you mean sensors and alternator etc, yep that too
- Other than additional available performance, must drive and idle like stock, and not overheat in stop-start of highway situations.
It will certainly have a new personality, like how a V6 camry and a V6 commodore have a different personality, but it will be as good.

You will definately hear something, but keeping it sensible like an OEM turbo car is easy.

Unavoidable in every last case, if it was found that your car needed maintenance then that work would need to be done and paid for. For example.
Desirable
- In-car power adjustment or tune switching
Completely useless, we are in the future now and the throttle is made for this job, but it can be added.
Bonus
- Additional EC functions, eg flat-shifting
If you want racecar stuff you can have it, all costs money though.
- Boost display
Fit any gauge you want after the build is done.

Yeah that's all doable. I won't turbo an NC1 though, without changing internals or using an NC2 bottom end/oem turbo block. Its a risk I am not getting involved with on the weaker NC1s.

So much easier without the brake and steering components on the exhaust side of the engine :-(

Yes, not cheap but then I don't think you can really expect to do a decent turbo install for less than $10k which is what it works out at when you factor exchange rate, shipping and duty.

Make that 2 BBR NC kits of heard catching on fire!!!
At least one was on a dyno so easily caught, but the one on track was a bit more of a disaster.
Its the stupid Carbon Fibre Heat shield that light up. Just stick with nice metal head reflectors and shields.
I've had a look at both cars as well and I'm not impressed with the quality of fasteners, clamps etc used. All light weight flimsy crap.
Sorry but BBR on a NC is not that great just like Dann says.
