2002 NB front bumper - fix or replace?

Postby drckarcher » Sun Nov 11, 2018 10:09 pm

Hi,

my front bumper has a couple of deep scratches and a dent from the way the previous owner had mounted the number plate.
I’ve got a quote to fill and spray (titanium grey) but the guy said he couldn’t guarantee that he can remove the dent completely.
The quote is $760.

Now I’m wondering whether it would be easier (and maybe not much more $$$) to buy a new bumper and have that sprayed rather than paying for a repair that may not be perfect in the end.

So, how much is the OEM part roughly? And how much would the painting be?

Looks like the bumpers are about $400 unpainted, plus shipping to your location. Spray couldn't be much more than $200, plus fitting.
For about $700 you'd have a new one! Sound right?

3-4 years ago I had a fender bender and ended up with a hole in my SE front bumper. Thankfully the lip was undamaged. A new OEM bumper cost me $780 plus paint. I couldn’t for the life of me find a second hand bumper or cheaper new option, at the time.

SE Bumpers must come at a premium, standard OEM NB ones are $400 unpainted.

I thought SE bodywork was all stock NB just with the front lip, rear boot lip and lower rear lip fitted.

Yes correct. I bought a new nb8b bumper and fitted my lip which was undamaged.

Check out the Fusor products such as https://www.lord.com/products-and-solut ... %28slow%29

https://www.lord.com/sites/default/files/UI3016_0.pdf

Used by the trade. Can be sanded, painted etc. I've seen the repairs and repaint of a Lotus Esprit v8 poly front bumper that to my eyes was perfect. All the various broken off pieces were re-assembled and I think Fusor 102 was used.

I'd just contact an MX5 wrecker and get a secondhand one for $150 or whatever.

Then paint it the correct colour for your car. (or, if you're lucky, it may already match)
make sure to keep the add on SE bits from your own bumper, like fog lamps, front lip, and whatever else there is.
Will be cheaper to re-use those if they're un-damaged rather than replace them.

I've found a lot of the "new" non-genuine Chinese made panels arent 100% and need a lot of adjusting and prep work, which adds to the cost of repairs.

Hi all,
Just got the quote for an oem bumper from the Mazda dealer: $710.60 incl GST

I might go looking for a wrecker...

Imlach's had a silver NB8B listed on their site the other week, I think it was at their Dandenong yard.

Otherwise, Allmaz in Clayton will have a bumper available, they keep lots of MX5's in stock.

Looks as though I was within $11. Not a bad guess.
