Hi,
Trying to measure the thickness of the stock aluminium bonnet skin on an NA (not easily done). Has anyone cut up a bonnet and can use a vernier caliper or micrometer to measure?
The bracing is 1mm thick so I'd guess the bonnet is the same.
Thanks
Bruce

Re: Thickness of NA bonnet skin?
Unfortunately took a badly hail damaged NA8 bonnet to the resource recovery centre not long ago. Just had a look & agree the single thickness area seems very similar to the bracing areas, except for may be a slight difference due to thickness of paint, ie more on former than latter.

Re: Thickness of NA bonnet skin?
Thanks Clubbie. I agree it's about 1mm (the top side paint is thick).
This leads onto the next question - is it weldable/has anyone tried? I've read horror stories about trying to weld in a piece of difft type of aluminium (it either works easily or is a horror story). I am considering welding in some aluminium louvers (a long running story of mine).

Think there was a bit of discussion on here about bonnet welding - might have been when davekmoore or speed or bear2230 was looking at vents/ louvres.

I will have a look at their posts. I think they went for those ones that bolt on (they may be efficient but aren't that pretty).

Re: Thickness of NA bonnet skin?
This post from MT.net is about the NB bonnet, not sure if 100% applicable, but thought I'd share.

For the record, NB Miata aluminum hood thickness is 1.2 mm with paint.
Strip all paint carefully from both sides, and you get 0.8 mm.
