Like others have said, what is it you are looking to do? Be more competitive? Can't imagine you're looking for something that will be cheaper and easier to maintain, because I think the MX5 is about as good as it gets in that department.

What's the car weigh in at now? Going to be hard (and potentially expensive if using CF) to find another 100kgs or more. Ditch the NA motor and go turbo like Kenny O?

Back home, rest a few days and think it over.

Staying NA is a given. I may try Daffy’s wheels and see if it makes a difference. Carbon parts are difficult in clubsprint.

There is actually a few heavy parts in the car that can be replaced with lighter ones. For example the PWR water/oil cooler, this was a street choice however is way over the requirements for a track car.

It will be difficult/impossible to get to minimum weight unless you start cutting up the car.

i have a shell at home that will be used. First job would be seat then full cage. Since I have most parts at home weighting them will give me an idea on what can be done.

Decision over the next few months for 2019, still sticking with naturally aspirated.
  1. NA6 at 804kg running my engine/drivetrain
  2. VL running a V8 min weight 1,070, lots available and would allow any V8 produced by Holden to be fitted.
  3. E30/E36 allows any BMW 6 cylinder engine to be used, again many choices. Min weight 1,248kg
  4. Daihatsu Charade min weight would be 703kg but boosted - more of a shits and giggles thing than a serious choice...


The VL will feel like a barge after the NA!

Personally I would love to see you stick with the MX5 and see just how far you can go with it, but you need to decide for yourself what you want from your motor sport. I am excited by the prospect of developing my car much in the same way you have done with yours, but maybe you feel that journey has come to an end? There is no doubt time in the car with more development, and as Trent recently showed, more time in the driver :)

Been very interesting reading about, and watching your exploits so far, and the car has a bit of a following now.

This is why it is a hard decision! The car does have more potential and it is not at its limit yet.

Changing is not easy as there are a few people I need to discus this with first, this includes people who have been supporting (sponsoring me) I cannot just change that easily. Taking the MX5 further needs a little more thought, also it would be interesting to consider the 'spirit' of clubsprint rules and also have the car capable of being road registered (excluding the noise/splitter requirements). That is what the car was previously.

Looking at the cars in clubsprint this year shows that it has become a serious category and is no longer 'road going race cars'. To quote Kendall when the winning clubsprint car came in and 6 people rushed out to pull the bonnet off and get fans into the engine "they spent more money on the bonnet than I did on my whole car". It was a sight do not get me wrong, the bonnet was off in a flash and almost floated away.

Spending the 3 days with Kendall and Guy was a blessing compared to last year with who I shared with. This year it was about enjoying the track, the company and the experience. Last year the garage people were all about tyre heaters getting out last so that they could record the fastest possible times.

The people who come and say hello, not to mention the posts (here and faceplant) make it even more difficult. Plus Shane's suggestion of come door to door racing in the 5 is also something that has been on my mind.

The feeling of applying for WTAC in 2019 with the same car for the 5th year and being accepted would be at least for me an achievement in itself!

I would love to see you preserver with the MX-5, the car has more time in it as it sits right now. Maybe more time with a few changes, but then you run in to the issue of getting used to the new changes and finding that time (again). You've put so much into the car, and I hate to see that effort discarded.

BUT

It's your car and your driving. You have to be enjoying it. Which is why I ask what you want out of motorsport. Are you going to be any happier spending many thousands on a new setup, with arguably more potential to be competitive, but leaving you in effectively doing the same thing you are now?

The spirit of Clubsprint has long gone unfortunately. It was inevitable, but there's always someone out there who's willing to spend more to win. I think the best us mere mortals like you and I can strive for these days is just get out there to be part of the event and enjoy the experience.

Do you still enjoy driving and developing the car?

Are you still getting satisfaction from achieving PBs, or do you want to be more competitive in events like this?

I am, hence will more than likely start the 804 plan! Good thing is I made some new contacts at WTAC which makes P804 a much better option. However the need to get onto Team Racepak in 2019 goes from a would be nice to I'm desperate :) Part of the plan is to use Smartwire.
