I believe Brian Ferrabee is running an R33 Skyline 5 speed in his Prod Sports turbo NB.

He said it was a pain to sort out, but if he's worked out most of the issues now it might be worth talking to him to get a line on another option.

I will have to touch base with him for a chinwag- but I have already made a move forward on this project.... I have secured a quality beemer 6 speed box for a reasonable price, still waiting though for a final invoice from Kmiata, they have a kit ready to ship though so full steam ahead :DIY:
FYI for those interested- there may be a rebuilt SE box, Bevis short shifter, “Iron Man” braced PPF and 3800lb organic Jim Berry race clutch up for grabs very soon......

I will be very interested to see how this turns out and what it ends up costing to do. I'll probably need to look at something similar down the track if I get serious with the race car. I'll need to get it going and make some decent power first though.

In the meantime I'd be interested in the braced PPF and clutch.

Pretty sure what ever box he actually has in his NB is also fitted with a OS Giken Gear set... and trust me these are not cheap, but again trust me they handle over 652hp on an FD3S.

Pfitzner Performance Gearbox in Adelaide also do gear sets for the Nissan boxes, which are probably cheaper than the OS Gilken, but still not cheap.

https://www.ppgearbox.com/nissan-r32-r33-r34-gt-r

The R33 boxes are plenty strong in their own right. Main reason for going for the after market gear sets is for ratios and dog engagement, but they are probably a bit stronger too.

The Z32 300ZX box would be another options as they are the same internals in a shorter case and can be easier and cheaper to find as they were ADM.

The other strong gearboxes to consider would be from the 6 cylinder turbo Toyota Supras. The R154 (5 speed made by Toyota) or the V160/V161 which are Getrag 233 6 speed boxes rated at 490NM/360ftlb, but supposedly good for a lot more.

I was luck enough to find the 6 speed reasonably quick in Victoria, I’m paying $1750 delivered to the Gold Coast- its from a parted out stock Z4 M with low k’s.
I have seen a few more of the 5 speeds in reasonable condition advertised for around the $1000-$1500 mark though.

A quick BMW gearbox transplant update, all mod parts and clutch are ordered and in transit, I been told shipping from the USA should only take about a week, and the gearbox is currently on its way from VIC to the GC.......more details very soon

Kmiata 6speed transplant now in full swing!

At this point in time, I believe that I’m the 1’st in Oz to have a crack at this (please correct me if I’m wrong.)

So to be clear and open with what a Kmiata 6 speed Beemer box transplant in total will set back a non DIY punter, you can expect to fork out this........(factoring in the sh*t AU vs USD exchange rate)

The entire kit was $6386 AU includes tax ($451) and shipping ($808) vai a repairer’s/ mechanic’s ABN, the Beemer clutch (from the US as well- as much as I wanted to support Aussie suppliers, unfortunately it was cheaper to import) was $420AU. Total $6806 in AUD, the gearbox delivered from Victoria to the Gold Coast was $1750 and at this stage, my mechanic is looking at around $600 to install.
So bottom line- all parts on hand and delivered, $9156 AUD installed- now this is not including the recoup from the sale of my rebuilt SE 6 speed box, “iron man” braced PPF, Bevis short shifter, Jim Berry 3800lbs race clutch and the SE driveshaft (sale price TBA.)

The following are pictures of the Kmiata kit received- (the flywheel pictured is a file photo, but believe me, in real life looks exactly the sane)

So now the transplant begins, more to come

I'm amazed that your mechanic isn't charging more for labour. $600 is about 6 hours labour, I see this taking closer to 10 hours, especially as this is a new kit with little documentation out there, and surely there'll be a few hiccups going into an RHD car. I realise you might be getting mate's rates though.

Are you keeping the stock rear end? It should be stout enough, but it will make for shorter gearing than the stock 6 speed and might be a little buzzy going down the freeway.

I doubt he has the capacity to buy car parts any more due to She Who Must Be Obeyed constraints :)
