Ha- cheap duty free tequila STM
Meanwhile (while sober) The inevitable has happened, a sudden rattle in a can sound from underneath and the gearbox is out and off for a rebuild! At this stage we know the bearings are gone, fingers crossed that there is nothing more too damaged. Hats off to it though at how well the SE gearbox is taking the power output. A repair summery to follow.........

Fingers crossed not too expensive!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: Daffy's SE
Stan, the SE box is supposed to be stronger, though not by much, than the stock 6 speed. Different heat treatment, or perhaps shotpeening, of the gears I believe.
Daffy, that will be an expensive exercise, they are generally considered an uneconomic repair proposition. I look forward to hearing about your take on that.

+1 for this and the KMiata adapter with getrag diff - might have to look into this myself when I eventually reach my 250kw goal

Re: Daffy's SE
Ok, so a few days to assess the Problem Child’s gearbox issue.
We took out the box, thankfully at the first slightest sound of trouble, so the damage is very minimal. The internal’s that need replacement have been identified and (thanks to Magpie) replacement bits have been secured so I can now rebuild the gearbox.
All the gearbox internals have been looked at, and seems the SE did not come with shot peened gears as thought (according to the fella that has the box right now, he says there is no evidence that he can see that makes this box any different to the standard 6 speed- I’m ASSUMING at this stage that shot peening may have only been a feature for Japan and US MSM versions- just speculation on my part at this stage), that being the case, a review and pricing of South Oz Neat gearbox shot peening was made!
So the 6 speed is ready to repair, strengthen and re-install...........
BUT, after discussion with my beautiful other half with regards to eliminating any future gearbox troubles, factoring in total cost, availability and longevity (as well as future power increases beyond the 400rwhp/300kw mark), consulting was had with mechanic Daz, JBT and Magpie (and a couple of other forum members I’ve spilt the beans to today, Stan the man and Tricky Trev), it seems very very likely that the Problem Child’s power train is going more Frankenstein- so enter Kmiata’s BMW E46 6-speed transmission upgrade kit. Nothing set in concrete yet (still putting price and other factors together.)
Stay tuned, more to come shortly!

Re: Daffy's SE
I have no clue what shot peening looks like once its done on the gears.
But it would be interesting to go to some of he US forums & talk about this. Maybe we can all learn something a little.

Re: Daffy's SE
But I'll appreciate you pioneering the solution for Australian cars!
I think nobody's really tried to find out if the MSM/SE gear box actually is shot-peened, I think it was probably a little wishful thinking propagated on forums, I doubt it's ever been true.

Re: Daffy's SE
Daffy, that is interesting! And here I was thinking that I might sell the spare NB 6 speeder to help fund an SE box, I might put that idea on ice now ...
I will follow your progress with the K-Miata conversion with great interest.
