So just to confirm the detent is not required for the operation of the gearbox?

The gearbox neutral switch is one of the inputs for the ECU to determine idle speed. I think that's its only function.

As far as I can tell the ECU uses neutral switch, clutch switch, TPS closed switch and ECT output to work out whether it needs to idle and how fast it should idle. 3 out of the 4 working seems to be enough though.

Geeze Bigdog, get the front of those guards down . Those things have the aero characteristics of a brick, but you have made them worse still Otherwise, I love it, especially the polished aluminium!
That single hoop probably dates the car somewhat, I doubt that it would pass muster as a new build?
