Replacement ND soft top big $$$

Postby 71coast79 » Mon Aug 13, 2018 6:38 pm

A pal of mine has an ND and was telling me this morning that because of a couple of "plastic clips" attached to the soft top, the dealership will be replacing the top under warranty. The "clips" cannot be repaired but the replacement cost (not payable by him of course) is $7,000.00!!!! Anyone ever heard of this? He did not have the car with him at the time and could not describe the full details.

??? to the dealer in question.
There is a Service Bulletin for GT roof's 2nd internal layer sagging which blocks the rear vision. And it is fixed with just clips. No idea why the dealer wants to change the whole roof. Sounds stupid to me. I gather Mazda will knock the dealer back.

See here for the relevant TSB: https://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/Convertible%20Top-Inner%20Cloth%20coming%20off%20causing%20Poor%20Appearance%20and%20Obstructing%20view%20of%20Back%20Window.pdf

Only GT soft tops have this problem. Roadster soft tops don't have the additional layers. Yes there are 2 different soft tops!

The really disturbing thing I found when shopping for a ND was that I knew of all these TSB's before buying mine and the dealers did not have a clue what I was talking about even when the car right in front of them had some of the issues.

Most are international so apply to Australian models.

Im assuming he's meaning the tension straps that snap at the rivets. If it breaks in the wrong section, or the dealer stuffs up the fix, it requires the whole roof to be replaced.
(This TSB: https://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/Conver ... 20down.pdf)

Ours has snapped on the drivers side, just waiting on Mazda approval for fix by dealer.

And yes, replacement cost is $7000
I assume that will come down as the model ages and quality second hand units hit the market regularly.

I knew there was something wrong with the roadster roof other than holes getting into them.

So the question is does your Pal have a regular Roadster or a GT?
Different soft tops with different problems.

Funny enough, that TSB says for “non inner lined roof” (ie Roadster) but ours is a GT and one snapped.
