Replacement Dash Vents

Postby ianoz » Sat Aug 04, 2018 9:49 pm

Looking to replace the dash centre eyeball vents on NB with closing types as per mazda-3 etc etc.
Has anyone done this and know which source car would fit?

this sort of thing (not tied to any particular model or look)

Mitsubish Eclipse vents are commonly used on NBs - Google this forum and miata.net for more information, plenty of people have done this mod.

What lokiel said. Cheap to get from EBay US. They need some modification to their depth and diameter but easy to do.

And just to clarify - the Eclipse vents do not come with vent rings that I have on mine.

The Eclipse vents are a really worthwhile upgrade. As mentioned just source from ebay.

Only mods to the Eclipse vents are a section cut off the end as shown here alongside a stock vent ...

I also filed in a recess just above the base that allows the white clips inside the dash to hold the vent better as well as being able to swivel the vent easily ...

thanks for the replies guys. love these forums!

I'd found the US threads (couldn't find anything on here) using vents from their cars, but was hoping there might be a local alternative :D . Looks like it's ebay time..

Cheers

To be honest, the easiest local option would be to take measurements from your Mazda ones and have a pole around your local wrecker, esp the Mitsubishi area. Since we never got the eclipse, other mitsu may have shared the vents.

It looks like the Suzuki Swift/SX4 item may be the same.
Probably easier than trying to locate the Mitsubishi item...

Each to their own in respect to what they use and where they look for them but an Ebay purchase of 4 Eclipse vents landed for around $US30 was for me cheap enough not to worry about scrounging around local wreckers etc for possible substitutes.

Not sure about NBs but to have the Eclipse vents fit flush in the outer vents (not Tombstone vents) of an NA, the diameter of the Eclipse vent surround needs to be reduced too.

Thanks for the heads up.
The outer vents on our NB have frustrated me for a while now, so I grabbed the opportunity to invest a whole $A12 for a couple from eBay.
The way that I look at it, if they work for us then it's a bonus - if not, it's not a lot of money to lose...including about a dollar for "government sucks tax"

But the SX4 ones are only $7aud with free shipping... :D

I have them in my SE, they're a great upgrade.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

From my garage thread ..

Okibi wrote:So I decided to try the Bitsashitty Eclipse Fast n Furious style vent mod

Difference was I tried to keep some of the extra flap at the back of the vent.

Image

To the left of the glove box I had to shave part back so it would fit inside the pipe work.
Image

In the middle tried the option to sand back the vent so it was the same size as the original vent, it fit in well but it sat so deep I couldn't utilise the same groove and the mazda vent holders.

So I kept this one larger so the grove was at the right distance.
Image

Because the factory pipe is a weird shape I only kept half of the blocker deeper in the vent.
