Shipping set of wheels/tyres interstate - protection?

Hi,

I have a potential interstate buyer for a set of ND wheels/tyres for sale on the forum.

What protection, packaging, and padding do you guys use to ship wheels/tyres interstate. I am worried about damage to alloys.

Main damage to worry about would be scratches to the faces.

They're pretty safe as far as dropping etc (well, within reason, if they chuck them off a building maybe not)

I'd just put some cloth over the face, then make up a big disc to cover the face, from some kind of firm material.
Thick cardboard, plastic, a few layers of thick fabric, etc.
Then just strap/tape that down so it doesnt come off with movement.

My go-to is ply (13mm min). Build a square skid from ply, with 90-100x50 runners to allow a fork to lift them. Stack wheels, strap to skid, strap well protecting the wheels (top wheel - or even all - upside down) - you could do it with two pairs side-by-side, same volume/weight, less stress on the strapping. Strap/bolt a piece of ply to the top. Use bubble wrap/carpet/etc where necessary to protect finish. I would probably strap the wheels together as a unit, and then put them on the skid with a threaded rod or two bolting the ply-wheels-ply sandwich together, as I don't trust the plastic strapping all that much. If you have access to metal strapping so much the better, but that will require additional care to ensure the finish is not damaged. If you use threaded rod, take out the centre caps, put them in a plastic bag taped to a spoke inside the stack, use the hole for the rod.

Don't skimp. Firstly the buyer is trusting you to do it properly, and is paying (one way or another) for you to get them delivered in the same condition they were shipped. You don't know how the package will be treated in transit, so make the package as robust as practicable. FWIW I use E-go a lot, and I haven't had a problem - so far.

I'd visit a big wheel/tyre place and ask them for their empty boxes (they'd be glad to get rid of them). Job done, no work involved.

Would work for wheels but not for mounted tyres as is the case here.I would go with the previous suggestions, but also understand that Oppolock may think it is not worth the effort! Peter

Last set of wheels/tyres I purchased and had delivered to me from interstate just had a cutout piece of cardboard either side of each wheel. Worked well enough ... unfortunately I've damaged them more myself since

Yep cardboard on the face, then a roll or 2 of glad wrap, wrap the whole Tyre/wheel assy and she’ll be right

Again thanks for all the suggestions. The potential interstate buyer has not come back to me so I am still hoping for a Victorian sale.

Plug: My set of four barely used Enkei TS10 Wheels & Michelin PS4 for ND are still for sale on this forum at a reduced price of $990!!!

I purchased a set from SA to Sydney and paid about $200 depot to depot via pack and send... They did all the packing for the buyer. It was cardboard on the faces and glad wrapped. Arrived all intact.

Easy for me- if I need to do it- I can use a private connection who would allow me to drop off at the business and they arrange the freight. In many instances things like wheels get strapped to a pallet- for pick up and unload by a fork lift .I pay nothing for cardboard because many businesses keep the boxes and re use for the goods they sell. My bet is that pack and send type organisations are really exxy. You might even get a hint from the tyre sellers who they are using- the freight forwarders will take your money - afterall is just freight and the pros know how to do it.
