6 speed gearbox oil

Postby matti89 » Wed Jun 27, 2018 3:37 pm

Hi,

I was wondering what fluid people are running in their 6 speeds. My 6 speed has a clunking issue when going from 1st to 2nd when cold. Also has a issue when going from 3rd to 2nd when cold also.

I changed the fluid around 10000km ago with nulon fluid and some smoothshift but that didn't make much of a difference.

The guys in USA run the motorcraft oil but that isn't available here unless I'm mistaken?

Cheers

Matt

Motorcraft is OEM ford oil from memory, so a dealership MAY be able to help.

Can't help with the 6 speed, but I just use Castrol VMX-M in my 5 speed and it's fine. (been using it in the car for maybe 10 years now)

ND 6 speed? Isn't there an issue with those boxes (or is it all 6 speeds)?

Totally forgot about ND's

If it's an ND just take it back to the dealer and tell them.
It's got a warranty, use it.

(also, next time don't just start tipping additives etc into a new car, that stuff is mainly for worn stuff that you just want to shut up long enough to arrange a replacement box)

Amsoil 75-90 GL4

The 6 speeds use a GL4 oil do not use a GL5.

Look to the right and update your vehicle description as it's handy.

I was looking at Amsoil aswell, $32 per litre on ebay, looks to be the only place to purchase it.

I will call the local ford dealership to see what they offer.

Not sure there's much you can really do to improve the change into 2nd (up or down) in the 6 speed. If I could, I'd fit an NB8A 5 speed - loved that gearbox! I have Redline in mine, but still have notchy 2nd. Been considering Beavis' SSK to see if improves the changes but not keen on the number of comments about (any) SSK's re noise and effort.

2" shaft extension will ameliorate the six speed problems. Cheap too.

Six speed, buy a MiataRoadster Shifter Tip Bush, make sure you get Pt No MR-SS-13.They have a website, mine, cost $30 delivered.
The difference in gear selecting is AMAZING.
You may or not know that the 6 speed can be filled through the turret, change the oil while you are fitting the bush.
Cheers

I gave the local Ford dealership a call. They don't stock the motorcraft stuff anymore.

The equivalent spec is wsd-m2c200-c. $30 per litre.

I will throw that in a see how it goes. I will look into the shifter extension aswell. I have already replaced the shifter bush, albeit not with the delrin bush.
