How to identify NA6 Vs NA8 calipers?

Postby Hoolio » Sat May 19, 2018 12:29 pm

How can I tell from looking at a front caliper whether it is from an NA6 or an NA8? I'm talking about the hydraulic part of the caliper, not the part which holds the brake pads.

My car was originally an NA6 but now runs the NA8 sized brakes, so obviously the bracket which holds the pads is from an NA8. I understand that the hydraulic calipers have the same piston size and are nominally interchangeable, but the part numbers are different and places which sell calipers list them separately so there must be some difference. On my car the large slider pins are at the top and the small ones at the bottom, which according to mx5parts.co.uk is correct for an NA6 and not an NA8. I wonder whether my car has got NA6 calipers with NA8 pad brackets, and the pad brackets mounted upside-down (i.e. the left one on the right hand side of the car)…

Caliper finger length is different: NA6 is shorter than NA8 - see Matty's posts in following: https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=146295
