Sorry to be pedantic, but the BP has a parallel key, not a woodruff key. A woodruff is half moon shape & the keyway slot stops short of the shaft end.
A woodruff key, on a longer crank, probably would have been a better design, but the BP seems ok if you use Loctite on the key & torque the pulley bolt correctly.

Re: B6/BP crankshaft pulley void filler?
Hi.
I just love the people who get on here and forget how old they are. You must all remember the days before the internet and before everybody became an expert. What a great time manufacturers had who produced faulty goods. No internet,no mobile phones we all lived virtually in our own little worlds and communicated by shock horror talking. Mazda knew what they had done obviously even after they and toyota and nissan had got their hands on the engine that spawned their copies- the ford bda. They should have learned but decided to save money with a design an apprentice could have bettered. I guess in a roundabout way I am saying problems were not widely reported so the damage to companies was virtually nil.

110% this. What astounds me though is that they knew what sort of bad job they did, and then did it again for the BP.
Especially given that the Toyota BDA inspired engine (the 4AGE) got it so very right. Even the BDA didnt have this sort of failure (although the oiling issues were bad enough)

Sorry to be pedantic but:

Yes, you do assert that big nosed crank failures have occurred. It is another word for stating, except with confidence or assurance. I am pretty sure that this is exactly what you are doing. Right?

If you want to be pedantic, I am arguing the point. An assertion is a statement without evidence. An argument is a statement with evidence.

I have rebuilt short nose and big nose engines and the design would not have passed basic engineering principles.

Re: B6/BP crankshaft pulley void filler?
know of maybe 2 NA6s that have had a full failure ... and only know of a single BP that's lost the keyway)
My '89 NA6 failed in 1998 at around 75k kms, & it had only ever received regular services at Mazda.
Can recall at least two BPs on here that failed (NMX516 & Wuey).

Re: B6/BP crankshaft pulley void filler?
My question is did the BP keyways fail from the 'untouched factory state' or had some work been poorly done?
I'm guessing there's 300,000 km BP engines with pristine keyways?

An allegation is a statement without evidence. A confident statement without evidence is both an assertion and an allegation. An assertion with evidence is still an assertion but no longer an allegation. I cannot find any dictionary references that support your definition but many that support my usage of the word, including the one I provided. Sorry to go OT.
