Just went out and visited 1. Mazda dealer. 2.Supacheap. 3. Crash Repair shop. Nil result.
The Mazda Dealer Parts Interpreter looked them up and said there are 32 to a side (there are 12 as far as I can see) and they don't keep them in stock but I could order them from Melbourne.
Supacheap have the Champion 4-pack for $7. but they don't fit (bought a pack and tried them - totally wrong size - see photo)

I then called at the biggest smash repair business in town. The Foreman said they don't have anything like that. "We have Toyota ones but they are not the same". Mazdas apparently don't have crashes.

So looks like I order a half dozen from the Mazda Dealer.

https://www.amayama.com/ might be a better option as they'll be cheap to post.

Not sure if these are for the MX-5 or not but a quick google has these part numbers

Mazda BC1D-56-145 (8mm Hole Mud Guard, philips head)

Mazda GJ21-68-885B-02 (Push type, not screw)
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Thanks Okibi, you have the correct Mazda (MX5) Part number (BC1D56145) and I note that they are 8 mm not 6 mm as I said previously (which might also explain why the 6mm Champion ones from Supacheap would not work.
I think I will give these a go from the amayama site as I am betting they are the item I am seeking.

Buy extras, as they get brittle and fall out (as what's happened).

Yes, good idea, Bruce. I was thinking of getting a dozen. They are only $1.33 ea on Amayama.
Mazda Dealer rang me back to say she'd found 3 - at $5.50 each. I think they are gold-plated.

Wurth sell these, but they are hard to find in their catalogue.

The main issue there would be that Wurth dont do retail sales, so you'd need to know a workshop that's happy to on-sell some to you.

If you do though, grab some, Wurth gear is top notch.
While I havent used the clips, of all the other stuff i've used from them I can't fault any of it.
