NB8A wheels

Postby DTH » Sun May 13, 2018 4:51 pm

Hi guys, started painting my wheels to make them all look the same. Gave the first one a light sand with P400 & cleaned it with acetone. Soon after the wheel had turned a light gold colour instead of silver. This happened with subsequent wheels also. Now whilst the gold is rather attractive it's too "hairdresser' for me. Any suggestions as to why the colour change will be most welcome.
Thanks,
david

Could have been the acetone ???? I use rubbing alcohol to clean sanded rims.

Did you paint the wheels, then sand, then acetone?
Or did you just sand the factory paint on the wheels then apply acetone.

Either way Acetone can affect certain paints. It is a solvent after all. Also a thinner. One of the stronger ones.
If you were looking at cleaning before painting, you should really use wax and grease remover.

And since you have a pic up, please do not put acetone on the plastic centre cap. It will slowly dissolve it.

I believe the NB8A wheels have a sand/gold coloured primer or something from the factory.

you'll find the most of the factory centrecaps, and quite a few of the wheels, eventually develop a goldish hue just from wear and tear over time.

Thanks hks_kansei, for your good info. Job all done now and I think it's a reasonable effort. Had sourced a couple of spray cans of a suitable silver only to need another can as I'd managed a couple of runs on the last wheel. So, back to the shop to find they no longer had that item & wouldn't get any more. Fortunately, a can still had a little left which allowed another supplier to copy it. Their product was far superior to the original too and they have recorded the mix in their computer for future reference. BTW, the acetone was replaced by some general purpose thinners. Of course the wheels were finished with a couple of coats of 2k clear. However, at this stage only the outer face has been done.

Thanks again for all your help, guys!
Cheers, david

Looks good! Is that paint supplier part of a chain? Hopefully you have inspired others to follow suit, and they will need to get the right colour.

Putting that effort into the stock wheels is, to me, a little misdirected though. I like the auto wheels, they have a smooth finish and just look a little different, between the 10AE and stock. There aren't many around, for the obvious reason that there weren't many auto NB8As, so they need an effort to find. I sold mine some time ago, but since I also sold my NB8A to pay for the SE I couldn't use them now anyway.

Thanks GM, no, not part of a chain. It's Oztrade Supplies at Nerang, Gold Coast and they have it recorded as Finixa Wheel Silver. I'm not familiar with the auto wheels.
Cheers

What are auto wheels. I didn't know manual and auto came with different rims.

The auto wheels look similar to the stock wheels. When you look closer, instead of the coarser finish of the stock wheels, they are smoother and have a slightly glossier finish. It's a subtle difference, unlike the 10AE wheels which are obviously shinier. If we hadn't lost so many posts with the forum cleanout I could probably find a photo on my for sale ad, but it has gone south with the rest.

I bought my set a long time ago, and used them until I got my Enkies. I am only going on what I was told at the time, but they may also have been on the Wheels 40th special edition.

Where's Craig, he'd probably know more. Paging Craig ...

IIRC, this was a Subaru colour - still got a touch-up spray can, the cap of which has: PJ9070 SNB 150 LIGHT SILVER MET barcode: 9300749290702.
