Yeah, that's super common. Hell, I would say I am only just scratching the surface with my setup.

Yeah, it really does.

Can (no pun) data get in the way of the horse and rider as one?

No, I don't think it CAN (puns should always be intended). If anything it, shows you when the horse is getting lame, or why it borked at that jump, and where the rider is flawed and where they can improve... that's if they bother to use it, or check over the horse after each ride.

I see, that clears it up. It's after the ride that the fun continues, during the ride gadgets could be distracting.

It is mainly after the event when the data is analysed. The main bit of technology I use on the track is predictive lap time and the shift lights... The rest of the data is not a distraction, the dash/ECU handle the warnings and the ECU the engine protection. I used to watch the dash (speed) and not the track, whereas now I hardly look at the speed.

Managed to finally get the 4 x tyre temps logging. I have added the LR temp to the dash as this is the tyre I normally overheat. Another 'bonus' is these are logged at 50Hz as not on the Haltech CAN.

What are you using for logging tyre temps? IR sensors or in wheel options?

You can also run Shadowdash on an Android tablet.

One of the things that annoys me with Android and Pi dashboards is the boot time and is why I used a Teensy 3.2 Arduino for my OLED gauges. The Teensy uses the MS3's CAN Advanced Real-Time Broadcast data and users can select any of its values for display.

Thanks Lokiel, I'll have alook at that. How do you do connection to phone, bluetooth?

Bluetooth connection was always dodgy for me, probably because of my Serial->Bluetooth adapter so I haven't released a version with Bluetooth yet - when I get time, I may get back to it (using another BT-serial adapter).

For the serial interface, see section 2.1 of the User's Guide for details since it depends on what hardware ports you have.
You'll always need a USB On-The-Go (OTG) adaptor (about $5 on eBay).
If you only have a serial port on your MS, you'll need a FTDI serial to USB adapter as well. These are expensive and you MUST use an FTDI version; most of the Prolific Serial to USB adapters are knock-off versions from China from an original Prolific design and no longer work, even Microsoft no longer supports the driver needed for them (TunerStudio wont work either and they recommend FTDI Serial-USB apapters for this reason).

My MS3-Pro only had a serial port but the board has USB pins on it so I connected them to a USB cable (cable threaded through a hole cut in the case fascia). This allows me just to need the USB OTG cable which I connect to my Android head unit.
Don't worry about dying, worry about not living!

A single infra red sensor. I got them many years ago from a company called Opti-Grip however they no longer supply them :( I'm trying to find the review on the forum I did (July 2015)

I'm really happy with my RaceCapture Pro. It's reasonably well priced, has a 50Hz GPS so lap deltas are very accurate and can log everything from CAN to individual analog and digital inputs. If you are a power user you can write your own scripts on it so you can extend with external Arduino modules or do logic stuff like active aero etc.

Not only does it log but you can stream it online via a sim and get live telemetry. I also find the wifi useful as I use it to trigger my GoPro and also hook up the tablet so I can walk around and check my coolant temp or previous run's data.

The RaceCapture Track is even cheaper so if you don't need the extend-ability it's a pretty good deal.

So is the IR sensor just pointed at the centre of the tyre Magpie? Is it measuring surface temperatures?

Yes pointed to the middle of the tyre and surface temp. I need to change the front sensor location as it does not move with the wheel when you turn to it will measure different parts of the tyre depending on how far the wheel is turned...

The difference between surface and core would only become an issue in the pits. This was taken in the pits, hence the 4°c difference between core and surface.

On car sensors are definitely the best way to go, but I would still like to get myself a decent pyro to start with.

Good news on the Racepak CL1...

Includes: The Vantage EFI Interface Module from Racepak streams CAN-based data from aftermarket EFI systems to the Vantage CL1 system. This gives the ability to monitor and record up to ten user-defined channels from the EFI system. Over 20 EFI Systems are compatible with the Vantage CL1, including Holley, Haltech, AEM, Motec, MSD, Link, Fuel Tech and many more.

The EFI Interface Module attaches to the CAN connector on the CL1 data box, and a 12 volt power source. It also requires a brand-specific interface cable, sold separately, based on the type of EFI system used. 25 Char: Stream EFI to Vantage CL1 50 Char: Stream aftermarket ECU data to Racepak Vantage CL1 150 Char: Stream CAN-based data from over 20 aftermarket EFI system brands to Racepak Vantage CL1.

It has the ability to monitor up to 10 user defined data channels. Monitor and record up to 10 user-defined data channels Compatible with over 20 popular EFI systems.

Seems to be the same methodology behind the VNET setup. Pity they have gone with a non backward compatible option, but it’s much better than nothing.
