Finally,
FINALLY, after 4 years I've done something I've been long planning and thinking about since the very begining. I've finally bought new wheels to replace the OEM 17" wheels.
Lokiel can now sleep peacefully, knowing one more SE/MSM has ditched the "boat anchors".
One reason it's taken this long is because I've been indecisive and couldn't make up my mind on what I wanted. Originally I was thinking 8" 6ULs but I feel like their offset was a little low, great for NAs, but NBs need a little more poke. So, 9" 6ULs? But I felt 9s were a bit too wide, only one real tyre option in Australia (225/45/15 RS3/4s).
Also, I felt like silver was the wheel colour for me. Ever since I saw some photos from the Peterson museum in L.A. with a whole bunch of classic Silver cars all running silver wheels, I just felt it was a classic good look. Then 949 ditched their silver wheels. Tungsten is nice, but I wanted silver.
My car will look just like these, right?I thought about some Work wheels, the Equip 40s and Meister S12Ps are beautiful (see Bear's Scooby for a stunning an example
http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=73548), but at double the cost of 6ULs I couldn't do it. And any that came up used had horrible stance fitments and were often a staggered setup.
At last I settled on Enkei RPF1s. They're not the prettiest wheel, but they're not ugly, and they're light, strong, cheap, silver and offer great fitment 15x8" +28.
They are the Goldilocks wheel.http://www.autotechnik.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&path=71_87&product_id=326Stack-em highSo offical. Very JDM. WowJuuuust right(Some) Accessories includedOriginally I wanted to shod them in 225/45/15 Hankook RS4s, but they're all sold out. So I began looking at 205/50/15s, there's a few options out there including the same Kumho Ecstas that I'm running on my OEM 17"s. But I wanted to see what full on 200TW grip was like and went for Yokohama AD08Rs. A lot of folks recommend them for fantastic warm weather grip, and better than can be expected wet grip too. I wonder how long they'll last in my DD duties though?
So sticky, just rolling them to the car for transport they picked up every loose rock!Next up was to weigh the suckers and compare them to the "anchors".
My gym scales are perfect for this kind of thing! So, we're looking at roughly 2kgs saved per corner, ~8kg total give or take a few grams. That should make a nice difference to the ride according to everything I read about unsprung weight.
As for fitment, the change should give a very slight negligible reduction in overall diameter, inner clearance against the shock should remain the same and it should poke out a touch more to nicely fill the guards. I've mounted 3 out of the 4 so far, and it definitely looks nice and wide, but not like it will rub.
Great tool for visualising wheel/tyre comboshttps://www.willtheyfit.com/I haven't ridden on them just yet, the act of weighing them has delayed that, currently the car is in the garage with 3 15" Enkeis and one 17" Racing Hart. But tonight I'll get everything bolted up, take it for a ride to work Friday to get some driving impressions as far as daily road handling goes. And if the weather holds I'll take the car for a mountain run on the weekend for some faster turns and to get some glamour shots.
