Fire extinguisher

I just bought a 1kg fire extinguisher from Repco for my first khanacross. Should have asked first: what are the requirements? A certain Australian Standard, a date stamp, type?

not familiar with khanacross, but it appears to be a normal 'speed' event. Check the supp regs for the event to be sure!

> std is AS1841 - if it's from Repco you'd be OK
> 900g minimum - so 1kg is ok
> maximum age of 3yrs from the manufacture date stamped on the body - usually on the neck. Good idea to fill in the numbers with a black marker to make life easier for the scrutineers.

gotcha's - depending on the scrutineers..
> The bracket with the extinguisher should be metal. Some of the cheaper ones have a plastic bracket and strap - that may well be failed.
> It needs to be mounted securely. On an MX it's common to have an alloy plate off the passenger seat front mounting bolts, and the extinguisher mounted to that. Make sure you use High Tensile mounting bolts & nuts - self tappers to the plate may be failed (ask me how i know...).

Seconding Supp Regs.

Definitely metal bracket with one/two over-centre clips. Scrutineering can be a bit inconsistent, but plastic is a no-no on common-sense grounds: no-one likes a kilo of metal (or a kilo of anything :roll:

) flying around the cabin in a shunt.

That's funny Ian, I have seen that on a Wakefield 300 rent-a-racer :shock:

And thanks for the tip on highlighting the date, that never occurred to me :BROADY:

I grabbed a 1kg from Aldi with 2 metal clasps for $15.

Oh and ALWAYS open the box and make sure the gauge is still in the green. :mrgreen:

... and that the date is not a year or more ago (Aldi warehouse unsold stock, and trot it out again (together with new stock) a year or so later).

It is a good idea to take the extinguisher out of the bracket every couple of months and give it a shake to ensure that the dry powder does not settle.

I just got one from Repco, dated 07/17.
Needed to replace my old one that was 1 month too old.

Interestingly the recent release of WTAC 2018 rules have the following:

It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to fit an on-board and plumbed in fire extinguisher system (fire bomb) of a minimum of 2.4litre capacity and recommended to comply with the FIA requirements.

Note there were at least 2 fires at last years event. Something to seriously consider instead of a 1kg...
