Wanted: DRL/fog lamp combo

Postby drckarcher » Sun Mar 04, 2018 4:10 pm

Hi,
I am looking for a legal fog lamp replacement with an integrated daylight running light for a Mk2.5
There are loads of items on ebay similar to this one:

Has anyone installed such thing in their MX5?

Thanks, Christian

A while back I wondered if this product could be a direct swap (mounting wise) for the factory fog lights:
https://www.osram.com/am/ecat/LEDriving%20FOG-LED%20fog%20lights-Cars-Automotive%20Lighting/com/en/GPS01_1074552/PP_EUROPE_Europe_eCat/ZMP_1072187/

Never looked into it further, but do let us know if you decide down that route.

Thanks for that link. I’ll have a closer look at those. The Osram Website doesn’t list the MX5 but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done provided the diameter of the foglight is the same.

The OSRAMs are 90mm in diameter, the MX5 lamps are 80....

That’s good to hear. I just went to measure again and the inner diameter of the bumper hole is 85mm max... would be the same on a SE I guess.

I think, I’ll order them and give it a go.

Hi Rob,
I had another look at this since one off my foglamps needed a new bulb.

The diameter of the Mazda lamp is 83mm and the Osram ones are 90mm as far as I can tell.

I’m just hesitant to cough up a few hundred dollars and have them sent over from the UK to find that they don’t fit.
Would you have photos of yours please?

Ask for a part number to confirm.

Any of the better makers will give full dimensions on lamp. Eg NARVA or Hella. The insert / lamp fits into an aperture - 85mm in this instance? Lamps are generally made to a spec - or at least they were. An alternative is fit purpose made separate drls like Philips daylight 4 and leave the OEM fog lamps in place. Chances are that the OEM selected fog lamp will perform better anyway than something which incorporates led as well.

From blinding to a foglight?
DRLs are more effective mounted up high. Fogs obviously down low to get beneath the fog.

Yeah tell Mazda that for the ND then.
Or all the other manufacturers that have mounted DRL's down low.
The position does not matter so much, more so the angle of the light to annoy oncoming drivers.

Not a fan of DRL's.
I find that all that happens in traffic is that you get distracted by the cars with DRL's and take less notice of the ones that don't have them. Extra safety for the minority at the moment. Once every car has them, we will be back at square one where everything looks the same. In fact it may be worse for pedestrians and cyclists then as they will be harder to notice with all the attention seeking DRL's.

DRLs are definitely a safety feature especially for small cars. The purpose of DRLs is to be seen not to see. They show a bright light but it has no optics for penetration. At one stage all drls went off with parkers or main beams- that seems to have been jettisoned. A drl cannot be seen from the side. Car cos have always played games of one up man ship on lighting to show off i.e. advertise and thats why so many makers dress the front of the car up to look like a 75th birthday cake. We should give awards to the most garish or the poorest taste - it would be hard to make a call on that.
Fog lamps are also a damn pain- used by many drivers illegally and annoying - these lights dont do anything for vision in normal conditions.

I ordered the OSRAM LEDfog 101 lamps but unfortunately they don't fit into the opening of the bumper.

Looking at Rob's pictures closer it seems that his lamps are mounted behind the opening.

The mounting points don't match those of the lamps

And rob seems to have an additional bracket between bumper and lamp

I've already googled for an adaptor bracket but no success.

Ant advice would be appreciated.
