Really is a bloody good read

Wow! Not sure how the images showed up for you, I tried and most of them are gone, just the photo$uckit black square of shame... glad you enjoyed the read, so many threads let you follow the process and thoughts, I’m not smart like Lokiel or creative like Bevis... but I can keep going till the car is going pretty well, hopefully that is helpful in some way to others.

Cheers Kev

Semi update...

I have got some lotus seats coming, I'll explain why later

wanted to draw some attention to the bracket purchase im making and if anyone wants to jump in.

http://www.flipsidecustoms.com/mazda-mi ... racket-set

From what I read he has got them sorted, low and gets the seat in the right position, which has been an issue for some.

We will get a small discount on the current price, which is about to go up as we speak.

The benefit will be group postage, hopefully saving each one of us.

I am not going to dilly dally, this order will be placed next week so if you are keen, send me a pm asap.

cost 320 ($US) per set plus postage costs. Postage is approx $100US for one set, so multiple sets will drop that down.

Cheers
Ian

Something that I didn't mention was that I found the oem efr bov was leaking...

It would make a whistle noise as it built from full vacuum and generally was sounding a bit weird.

Lokiel mentioned to me that when he replaced his with a turbosmart version that the quality was vastly different... so I thought it was probably worth replacing as the oem ones are know to wear out and crack.

Replaced it, huge difference between the billet alloy turbosmart and the plastic bw oem unit.

And bingo, the whistle is gone, the turbo is absolutely quiet until it is making boost...I really hated that annoying whistle!

As you can see in the pic also, I have chosen to remove the egt probes and covered them with end caps.

Next thing to install is this mishimoto baffled catch can. To vent or not to vent that is the question... how much do you like hot air going into your intake vs how much do you like killing the bee's, or being squashed like a bee from the epa?

Image

I will most likely plumb back, as this unit does a good job separating oil vapours ( but cold air is always better... :| ).

Car is currently at the panel shop getting the bumpers plus lhs quarters resprayed. Also, the black roll bar will come back a matching silver...

I have also, sold the hardtop and installed a new mohair soft top from Prestige Soft Tops, great piece of kit. It was mush more relaxed fitting one for the second time and have been loving the convertible life that was missing from the exige. Pics to follow this week when I get it back.

This week scored a set of Lotus seats, these seats are great in my opinion, easy to get into and are firm ( a good thing to me ), sit low and can be used with harnesses which I think is the best compromise for a 99% street car. Buckets are cool but for a daily car with passengers that are not 2, I didn't want another set of buckets as the side bolsters for getting in and out get annoying.

I am going to redo the foam to give them plenty of cushion and dye the leather to suit the car. Looking forward to sourcing some brackets from StillIC 8) as I have been schooled that the flipside frabrications brackets are made for LHS cars and as such do not align the drivers seat well with the pedals... Thank you ManiacLachy for the heads up!

Haha, so glad the turbo is fixed, used to give Kirk sh*t for that annoying whistle all the time, didn't know there was something wrong with it, just thought that's how they were

Yeah totally, when I was driving the car back from QLD i'm sending the text back to kirk "whats that whistle?"

New map sensor, actuator and bov, goes and sounds very differently.

You can’t use a harness with these Lotus seats Ian!

You can buy grommets to install which put the harness right over the shoulder. I’ll find the link. Is that was you meant?

Not unless you want your wife to become your widow ...

No crotch strap, no HNRS (HANS) (well you can use the Simpson one which uses a different system to restrain movement of the helmet), but it also opens up the possibility of the so-called 'submarining' where the trunk slides underneath the waist straps (helped by tightening the shoulder straps) ... This may not be a major risk with our relatively upright seating positions, but I for one wouldn't use a 4-point. You may also find that some events require a 5/6 point harness.

If the drivers shoulders are at least as high as the seat shoulders, then I don't see why a HANS can't be used. You would have to cross the shoulder straps behind the seat.
Sure, a 4 point harness is nowhere near as good as a 5/6 pt, but they are CAMS approved for all speed events, & certainly a lot safer than a lap/sash.

Nah the 4 point will kill you to death, horrifically.

The lap belts stop you sliding forward using the bottom of your ribcage tearing your insides to shreds and allowing enough time to say bye to your family but with no way to save you.

Just because the accountants and lawyers at CAMS are comfortable with it doesn't make it safe for you.

The question is, what is best with those Lotus seats that don't have the anti-submarining hole for the crotch strap.
My Schroth 6pt harness instructions say "never run the anti-submarining straps over the front edge of a seat........and in fact encourages submarining".
I take that to mean that a 4 point would be better with those seats.
