Thanks to Lokiel! :D :D :D these arrived in the post,

Image

I first tried the medium boost Borg Warner actuator, which is rated with a minimum boost setting of around 9psi. Instantly the difference between the old and new actuator is felt, making nice smooth power all the way to redline.

Using the locking nuts on the actuator rod I could add pre load to the bw spring to raise the opening threshold (which raises the peak achievable psi limit as well) OR fit the good looking turbosmart unit which allows for swapping the internal springs for a higher minimum boost setting. I chose the 12psi setup as that gives the dyno tuner a range of 12-24ish psi to play with, should be enough!

Image

Back to Anthony https://www.facebook.com/tunedbyanthony/ for the full psi tune. My goal for the tune is based on the limitations of the parts I am using. At this point I am keeping the very quiet (81db) 2.5" exhaust (3" dump into 2 1/2" at down pipe) as I spent good money on the euro4 cat and I am happy to draw out the process with this car, plus I am interested to see how quick it can be at this fully engineered and legal state. So between running 98 and a very restrictive exhaust I am hoping for as close to 300whp as possible, the turbo will run the boost but knock will be an issue on 98, not helped at all by back pressure from the euro4 cat etc....

I made up up a little kit to test how much oil vapor was being generated under full load as the silver car used std pistons and had significant blow by pumping large volumes of oil through the catch can setup, it was a real issue that even caused the ms3 map sensor to get clogged with oil residues. This time its something I am watching more closely.

Image

Here are the results, there are two tunes over lapped for the picture, one is the "low boost" 11psi wastegate tune triggered using the fog light switch near the drivers door. The second set of lines is the full gas tune, limited by some knock creeping in, we spend lots of time with the ignition map making it safe.

Image

Out on the street it feels super fun, I could only do half a dozen squirts before the egt probe nut worked loose and came off leaving me with a noisy drive home with a leak out of the hole where no 2 cyclinder egt probe was... off to get some end caps...but...the car feels very playful and comes on with a very real urge the sound is delicious.

What are your impressions of the EFR6258 vs the Garrett 2860RS? People say the EFR should spool sooner make better transient response and be all around better, but it's hard to pick the marketing from real life sometimes. And you're someone who's dríven both now.

Good question Lachy, obviously there are a few differences between my silver 2860rs car and this efr car, mainly the 3” system vs 2.5 and that the gt was running e85. That said there are a few key points which are clear to the this driver. The efr is better.

Is spools up quicker and makes more boost faster, it also sounds more alive. Even though the green efr car is making 45whp less than the e85 gt car it comes on with the same level of kick. If/when I go 3” and e85 the efr will be ridiculous in the top end far surpassing the 2860rs.

99% of my driving is at partial throttle, the turbo responds as if you were pushing it harder... but your not using more than 1/5th throttle... but then with the foot flat the torque response is more impressive than the numbers show. Not that 280whp is not impressive to drive but the way it goes from 100whp to 200whp in a moment is what really excites.

Shame it will be all the plumbing bits at the same time, exhuast manifold, turbo intake setup, dump pipe, possibly oil/water lines... new clutch, wheelie bar, botox for your face so you can go to work still!

It's the built long block required to put it down that gives me nightmares! If it was just plumbing and a turbo I'd be making plans already.

I live my power dreams vicariously through threads such as this one ... saves me much $$$, explanations, running, ducking and weaving   ... Learn a lot from them too. Though they do have some tendency to dissolve resolve :? Not sure I want a whole lot more power from mine ( well - maybe just a bit more ) but am certainly liking the idea more and more of the smoother power delivery available with the tuning.

Loved your silver car Ian and enjoying following where this one goes ...

Hey Kev, I looked for your build thread...eyes not working and couldnt find it. linky please. Most things in life are not worth doing, I hope I'm saving you lots of cash. The car goes to the paint shop for a few bits n pieces and once the roll bar is back in Ill shoot some video, that should help you decide either way :P

Sat outside with a coffee this morning - checked quickly through messages, emails and a few of the threads on the forum on my phone - and ended up reading this thread from start to finish!! Interestingly, reading it on Tapatalk all the lost Photobucket images show up!! Really is a bloody good read
