Quick vs Short Shift Kit - what's the difference?

Anyone able to please advise what the difference is (aside from almost $200.00) between the Quick Shift Kit and Short Shift Kit?

An examples of each can be found in MX5 Mania's offerings:

I'm interested to know the difference and how to identify whether other sellers are selling a Short of Quick Shift Kit as the terms seem to be used interchangeably...

That’s what I had previously thought but if you open the links I posted above you’ll note that the price difference between the two is $186.00, both are being sold by the same vendor, surely must be more to it than just being the same thing with differing names....

The more expensive short shifter does seem to include a few more items with it based on what is shown in the picture.

Beavis also sells a good short shifter kit at a good price. Greatly reduced the shift throw and feels quite nice.

Cheers. There is a few suppliers that sell Quick Shits/Short Shifts both here in Australia and overseas. But as I've tried to illustrate above the prices can significantly differ between the offerings, even from the same supplier. I'm specifically wondering therefore what the difference/advantage is between the varieties. i.e. is the Beavis Motorsport Quick Shift equal to the MX5 Mania Quick Shift (price wise they are similar), then what is the advantage of the MX5 Mania Short Shift which is significantly more than both...

Email or call Mania, they'll tell you the difference. I'm guessing one has more parts than the other, one will be a full rebuild, one will be just the short shift components.

Its really nothing more than a lever.

Short / quick shift kits work by altering the relationship between the pivot (the big ball thing in the middle of the lever), the knob, and the bush on the lower end. Move the pivot point further away from the lower bush and you move the knob less distance to change gears (but also will take more effort)

Only differences between kits will be the amount they alter this ratio (ie how much "quicker" / "shorter" the shift will be), the quality, and what's included (for example, some of the ones in your links come with shift boots, some don't).

I did so back in December but they were probably winding down for the Christmas holiday period. I have sent another to Ajay but posted this thread under the assumption that someone else may have also asked previously and be able to enlighten me...

Re the ratio, all three advise that they are 40% quicker shifts or reduce shift throw by 40% so would assume that the ratio is the same for them all.

Based on the items pictures, MX5 Mania Quick Shift seems to have the least parts included.

Beavis Motorspot has parts as per the MX5 Mania Quick shift but with an additional bushing and cable tie, but less the gasket. The two products seem to look very similar.

The MX5 Mania Short Shift kit has a very different looking shifter shaft to the other two and the included parts differ.

Yes, the MX5 Mania Shift Kit includes the lower rubber gear shift boot in it. But they sell those separately for $38.00 < http://mx5mania.cart.net.au/epages/mx5m ... ID=5330006 > so it doesn't explain other $148.00 price difference...

You can visually tell what the difference is. The extra weight from the shifter in the first link makes the throw motion quicker and easier on your hand/arm.

With all the shifter kits mentioned above, it is more or less just wording. "Quick vs Short" - they are interchangeable.

As 1600Dave said, a shifter is fundamentally just a lever. If the fulcrum (the large ball of a shifter) is lifted up out of the gearbox with a spacer, then the throw will be reduced and the effort will be increased. There are other shifters out there which do not include any spacers, and literally just reduce the height/position of the knob - I'm not a fan of those.

The difference between the various kits is both a factor of quality/manufacturing, extra components included and the amount of R&D/testing that has gone into them.

The cheaper one is from China, The other one comes from Germany and has more bits.
