This is very similar to one of my projects on my 2017 list. But my aim is to build the seat without specialised tooling, only general tooling used. I don't believe FIA or ADR testing will cost a fortune, but will be too much for one person to bear. I would like to explore the group buy option on this front.....

Finally got some measurements with the hardtop off. The seat is on custom bent rails. If the rear eye bolts are relocated further back you could gain another 6mm of height.

With my helmet on, you would need to take into account the shape of the hardtop as there is more than this.

The finished brackets. They still use the OEM mounting points and grade 8.8 bolts

non expert here but many of the photos show seats hard up against roll bar and clearly thats not a great idea. Whether someone is safe or not in a big shunt etc is not quite so easy to assess. A bar might be approved to "whatever:" but does it have restrictions related to the driver and how they sit? If person does not fit a car the obvious plan is change the car. Even stock NA NB etc cannot accommodate really tall and big frame people. 6mm of height is nothing as a gain.

There is an argument that the CAMS approved foam on my cage behind the seat could be removed. There is a bit of room and the seat is not hard up against it, the photo angle is deceiving.

I will find out next weekend if the padding is needed down the right hand side of the roll bar.

11. PROTECTIVE PADDING
11.1 HELMET AND HEAD PROTECTION:
(a) For vehicles subject of a safety cage structure as per Article 3; Application: where the helmet of an occupant could come into contact with the safety cage structure and/or any safety cage bar that is directly above or to the side of the helmet of an occupant, protective padding shall be fitted to that area, which complies with:
(i) International Competition and below, FIA standard 8857-2001, type A (see FIA Technical List No 23 “Roll Cage Padding Homologated by the FIA”); or
(ii) For National Competitions and lower, SFI specification 45.1. For each 1st Category vehicle, the use of SFI specification 45.2 for the head rest is permitted.

Where it can be demonstrated that the fitment of protective padding unduly hampers the occupants’ ability to operate the vehicle in a safe manner, the requirement for padding will be negated in the immediate area of concern at the discretion of the Chief Scrutineer.

11.2 BODY PROTECTION: Where the body of an occupant could come into contact with the safety cage, it is recommended that flame retardant padding be fitted. FIA standard 8857-2001 or SFI specification 45.1 padding

I worked hard for every mm of clearance I have in my seat and under my roll bar. 6mm is a nice little win. Next step for me is a custom seat which is more or less moulded to the shape of the floor of the car.

I get the feeling you are not as tall as I am (1.90m), and that you are not so tight in your car that 6mm is significant to you, but I can feel it in my NA, although I may not notice it in my Falcon.

Will get a measurement on the weekend from the hardtop to the helmet when strapped in. For reference I am 175cm.

Happy to have people try the seat at Sandown, just pop in and say hi!

Resurrecting an old thread

I picked up a cheap Cobra Evolution Standard seat on GumTree and its looking like being an good fit for the NB, even with the side head restraint.

Its going top be mounted straight to the floor and at a long legged 183cm, it looks like I should have plenty of leg room and more importantly be able to get my helmet under the BD roll bar and hard top.

I'm yet to build a mount for it, but its not looking too difficult. I'll post some pics when its done.
