The issue is still present on full throttle. It's like I'm hitting a boost cut.
Funny that it didn't happen this morning.

I'm planning on checking the fuel pump sock next, then cops wiring then cops individually.

I had something similar when I hadn't tightened one of the hose clamps on the turbo to intercooler pipe. Would feel ok at normal throttle but lose power at hard throttle. Couldn't work it out until the hose blew off under hard acceleration one day!

I pulled the fuel pump and found the remains of cloth tape wrapped around the filter sock.

I also found the 2 wires had been joined by twisting them together!

Now soldered and covered with heat shrink.

When I first experienced the sudden loss of power (SLOP) the tank was reading between a 1/4 and 1/2 full.

After cleaning the sock and going for another test drive the tank was reading just under a 1/4 and the SLOP was still present.

Usually I fill up at BP with 98 but at this hour they were closed and I had to use a smaller station. I added 25 litres of their 98 and the fuel gauge now reads between half and full.
SLOP is gone and I managed at least 3 power runs with nothing but "holy crap I'm flying" acceleration (HCIM). It is a cooler night tonight though.

Was it fuel surge all along? I've run my tank down to 1/4 full in the past with no issues.
Could my fuel pump be dying?

Will take her out again tomorrow for further testing... definitely prefer HCIM to SLOP :)

Regarding your braking situation, first thing I'd do is a new set of more agressive pads. I always suggest Hawk HPS / HP+ / Blue for daily /weekender/track .

And no, you won't be able to upgrade your rear discs without getting the larger caliper to suit - but i don't think you need to just yet.

I enjoyed watching your brake video the other day, have also been reading up on bpv's and forum posts regarding the sports brakes being fitted to earlier models.

The Akebono pads that are on the fronts are a very dusty pad which leads me to believe they are also aggressive. I'm personally not a fan of them and wonder if that's making the brake balance worse again.

Under very light braking all is well. Having to stop quickly is a different story. There is not much of a line between light and lock-up breaking.

Unfortunately I'm not confident that the stock rears with a more aggressive pad will be enough.

I've read many a post from people that have the full set of sport brakes and they still complain about not having enough rear brakes after knee point.

So, my plan is still to find a set of sports rears. Disc size goes from 231mm to 276mm @ 10mm thick. Piston is also bigger than all previous mx5 calipers.

If I still don't like the braking feel once at that stage, I will go for a more aggresive rear pad such as the Hawks.

Only after all of that will I be in a position to decide if I need to change out the bpv or not.

Have taken the car out on a decent drive.
Was much warmer today than last night.

Fuel gauge still above half and no sign of SLOP. Am guessing its a fuel pump issue.
Fuel filter was changed less than 1,000 km ago.

Back at home, thought I'd tidy up the engine bay a little.

I wasn't happy with how this part of the loom rubbed against the coolant reroute.

So I repositioned it to run under the reroute.

that fuel sock looked real sad! you didn't upgrade the pump when you went turbo?

Yes it did! Was just the remnants of the tape that was used to insulate the wires.
Dodgy but now fixed :)

I never upgraded the pump as I was told by numerous people that the stock pump will outflow the rx8 injectors, which it has for the past year with no issues.

I'm not convinced that it was just the sock, especially as I still experienced loss of power at full throttle after cleaning it.

What I fear is an electrical issue but time will tell. Unfortunately I've been too busy to be able to take the car out since my last post.

The thing that bothered me most was the firewall hole from the mania inspired intake.

I've not gotten to painting the rivets yet but this is what it looks like.
