1.8 tailshaft bolt source

Hi guys, i just was so very excited to find that the 1.6 and 1.8 tailshaft to diff bolts are indeed different.
Can anyone help out with a set, recommend an easy source to precure them with parts numbers supplied, or even suggest a generic high tensile grade shouldered bolt size i could source from the Bolt Barn or similar business?
Was so close to crossing 'fit tailshaft' off the to do list.

Try your nearest Mazda dealer.

Part numbers listed in here, but not 100% if yank numbers match ours

Otherwise, the dealer can usually look them up easily enough.

Oh crap. My torsen and shafts didn't come with bolts so I'm in the same boat. Curious to know the answer.

Ok, so it has been a long arduous battle trying to find the correct part numbers for a set of torsen2 tailshaft bolts. The main problem is with trying to order through a couple of vendors including the local Mazda dealer requires me to provide a VIN number. My 5 is a '90 NA6 MX5 and as such they can only order parts appropriate for it. They did suggest however providing a VIN number from a later model car to proceed with an order for tailshaft to diff bolts.
I am not sure if even asking for someone's VIN is appropriate though without one the dealership will not help out.
Does anyone know the correct OZ part numbers or is there someone trusting enough to help me along with ordering these tailshaft bolts? Happy to compensate, pay for the privalage etc.

The vin thing is just them being temperamental pricks.

Usually it's as simple as "how much for X to suit a 1999 mx5?" And they show you the screen and ask some specifics of There's a few options.


Did you tell them it's for a different car to original?


As far as a vin, jump into carsales and look for any NA8/NB for sale in Vic, note the rego, then jump on the vicroads site and enter that reg into the rego check bit.

It'll show you the vin, engine number. etc.


Example, a blue Na8 with rego NA018 comes up with JM0NA30P500100102

Thanks mate. Appreciate your advice. Will give it a go and see what happens. Past that i have sourced some 10.8 grade bolts that fit perfectly, just not a part of the car I'd be inclined to take shortcuts on with non standard bolts.

Not quite, Super Torsen started with the NC.

The ADM SE got a slightly different version of the T2 than that used in other NBs, it's actually the same as the one used in the Honda S2000, hence the extra spline on the output shafts. :wink:

If someone has the correct bolt then its not hard to measure the bolt- head size e.g. hex head thickness, mm across flats, grade marking, length and of course thread type e.g. thread count per inch etc and maybe finish . Fastener suppliers will id a bolt and match it. If its a certain grade then it makes sense not to go under spec. In business we often had to source for low volume requirement screws and we could do that quite easily over the phone by giving a description. My guess is that what you sourced will be fine.

Thanks guys, the bolts I sourced were indeed fine although anyone attempting to source non OEM bolts in the future must be mindful that large bolt heads may foul on the lip on the diff side of things.
Also the local Mazda dealership were less than helpful. As soon as i mentioned i was retrofitting a later diff into an NA6 they were quite blatant that they dont supply parts for 'modified cars'.
I wish i could work out how to type that in italics to emphasize the attitude expressed to me dosed with a modicum of scorn and disdain for us apparant car hoons!
40 years old, 40k average km a year and no fines, tickets, crashes...I'm almost ashamed of my anti-'sick mate' driving style. Hopefully it rains tonight so i can bolster my alpha male status by throwing single wheeler burnouts on a wet surface. :twisted:

I don't know what bolts the mx5 tailshaft takes however often tailshaft bolts have a machined shank and a very fine thread. Given the attitude of your local dealer, I would talk to somebody like Hardy Spicer who specialize in universals and tailshafts, I'm sure they could help you out
