Postby wasp47 » Wed Nov 01, 2017 1:00 pm

Hi
I have searched but unable to find the weight of an NB Glass window soft top including frame. Does anyone have the answer to this secret.

Around 25kg but I can't remember whether it's 22 or 28kg...

Early HT (no headliner & no demister) about 40lbs - later HT (headliner & demister) about 50lbs: https://www.miata.net/garage/hardtop/

NA soft top (PVC window) is 15 kg (as weighed by me on a load cell).
Glass window of dims 84cm x 39cm x 3.5mm (or thicker?), density 2.5 g/cm3, weighs at least 2.9 kg.

I am going to say the glass window soft top weighs 18 kg (or 40 lbs).

The lightest Mazda hardtop was on the original NA6, of which at least 5 kg is glass window (3.5 mm thick according to Mazda design sketches). Later models were heavier with gradual changes. I find it difficult to believe that any Mazda hardtop is as light as a glass window soft top (40 lbs).

I note that the CarbonMiata GRP hardtop is 11 kg without window, so ~16 kg with a window.

I doubt there's 4kg in the liner and the demister.

Demister is a few lines of super thin copper and a plastic plug. 500g at most.

And the liner is a sheet of 2mm foam, which I doubt would even weigh a kilo.

I'd suggest the weights in the miata net garage aren't correct.

Haven't had my NB8 HT along side an early NA6 HT to compare inside & out, but understand construction & finish also is better.

True, Mazda may have included extra structural stuff inside.

From comparing my NB top to my gfs NA top the construction looks identical externally.

But, I'm not cutting open a perfectly good top to check if the NB one has thicker plastic, or bracing or something.
